The Chicks are back and better than ever.
It may have been their return to Austin City Limits, or a great band (and a monster bass player), or the new material, which they expressed comfort with and the audience appreciated. Natalie played an assortment of guitars, Emily played her National electric on one song, and Lloyd was there on Dobro and steel.
They appeared lighter, more relaxed and confident than when I saw them in concert, and they rocked more. The only really country song was 'White Trash Wedding.'
The only bad thing about it--you guessed it, not enough steel. I think sound men have a hard time knowing what to do with pedal steel. Too loud, too soft? The program showed that it's an elusive sound in an ensemble; but what could be heard was great, and at one point a gritty and bluesy tone from the Mullen.
An enjoyable evening, I'm sure, and great sound from a TV. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I caught this on TV last night and really enjoyed the show. I thought Lloyd Maines
did a fine job, just wished I could have heard more. _________________ Twang to the bone! |

First of all, I TOTALLY agree with Arch.
Second, I thought the vocals were real good, and the stuff with the string section was outstanding.
Good show all around, but I'd have liked to have heard more of Lloyd's playing. |

10-4 on keeping the politics out of it! I also saw the show and was totally impressed with every aspect of it. Natalie & the sisters have great vocal chops and Marty's fiddle is right on target. The backup band is top notch although I would have liked to hear Lloyd's pedal steel a little more on some numbers. All in all it was a great show and I'd like to see it live........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

I caught just the last couple of songs, and they sounded pretty good to me. If they repeat the show, I'll record it and watch the whole thing.
Did Lloyd play the dobro that was sitting on a stand? I met Lloyd last year when he played a show out here with fellow Texan Terri Hendrix. I had him play my Clinesmith reso after the show and he really liked it.
He asked me to play that Gibson Dobro to see what I thought. Lloyd Maines asking me? Seemed a little bit like Alex Rodriguez asking me what I think of his bat!
At any rate, I really liked it - I think it was the best Gibson made Dobro I have played since they took over the company in the 90's, and I have played a number of them that were mediocre.
So for those of you that saw the whole show, I would be interested to know if Lloyd played that dobro on any of the tunes. _________________ Mark |

Restricting this thread to just the music is intollerable, because I think they look cute. |

We could get into trouble real fast if the thread took a turn in that direction.
I play the dobro more than anything else, and seeing Emily Robison with her flowing brown hair, and the long legs, and that Scheerhorn strapped on... well - it makes me week in the knees.
I better stop now! _________________ Mark |

I must confess I think Natalie is especially atractive. I think I'm in lust.
For some reason, ACL runs a week later here. Last weekend while the rest of you were enjoying the chicks, the show here featured Ray Davies of the Kinks.
Davies is really a master songwriter, but watching him doesn't raise my blood pressure the way looking at Natalie does. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Lloyd did play the chrome Dobro on one tune; a week later, I don't remember which one, but the sound he got was great.
I'll admit, the visual thing--they're not unpleasant to watch. Especially Natalie's 3" heels pounding the floor to set the beat on 'White Trash Wedding', which they did as a trio. Pretty hot. Natalie's a good rhythm player, and I agree, Marty's so good on the fiddle. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I haven't seen them or any pictures of them in a few years, but judging from the comments, I've got a question: Has Natalie been hittin' the slim fast or something? Or maybe some of you guys are into the BBW scene... _________________ Patrick |

Ah HA! She HAS been hitting the Slim Fast! And maybe she's not even keeping THAT down. She's lost a whole 'nother Natalie by the looks of it.
I can't deny it, I DO indeed believe that thin is in.
Of course if I'd just read the original post more carefully... :
