Does anyone know the registry path for default screen resolution in Windows ME?
A friend has a computer, and changing the screen resolution via settings-control panel-display will not hold the settings. Every time the computer is restarted, it reverts to 640x480.
Or...could this be caused by a faulty video driver?

That would indicate a faulty video driver for sure. I would recommend downloading the latest Win ME driver from the manufacturer's website and install it or upgrade to it. Don't go mucking around in the Registry if you don't have to. It could lead to bigger problems.
BTW: 640x480 is VGA mode, which is the fallback resolution if no valid video driver is present, or the installed driver has been damaged. It is also the resolution used for DOS text and graphics and by the Windows Startup screen.

I agree with Wiz - Video Drivers.
Also, some PC's (I've seen it on Dell's and Gateway's) if you do a reinstall and do not install the motherboard chipset drivers you cannot set the Video resolution beyond the default "VGA" settings (and you can't install the sound drivers).
Also, sometimes reinstalling the chipset drivers will allow the device drivers to work and correct audio and video problems. |

Hmm...okay. I didn't have a lot of time to noodle with it, but the sound drivers work, and the video resolution can be changed to just about anything - it just won't hold those settings when the thing is shut down. I also thought it might be something in the startup file (a whacky screen-saver or other video gremlin) that was over-riding the defaults. Next time I visit him, I'll see about loading some new drivers.
