Hi all - thought I'd introduce myself. I finally picked up the steel after many months of reading posts on this forum. I've played guitar for a long time, then started on ukulele a few years ago, got interested in Hawaiian and country music, and here I am. I feel like I know many of you already from your posts - so it's good to finally join the forum.

Just finished reading Guitar by Tim Brookes, which is half memoir (guy turns 50, buys expensive custom guitar) and half social history (how the guitar became THE instrument in American popular culture). Anyway, it's fascinating stuff, including a chapter on the Hawaiian guitar and its place in musical history. He describes Joseph Kekuku as "arguably the most influential guitarist in American history."

By the way - no relation to Ted Smith of Melobar fame.

Hi Ted and WELCOME! Glad you decided to join us, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. As I'm sure you've found out from watching, this place is great. What a vast resource for friends and info. I'm still a newbie (and don't even play guitar), but with your background I'll bet you'll be flying on the steel very quickly. Good luck with it and have fun.
Oops, didn't fully read your post. For a good book, or for videos and dvds, you can check in the "search" options on here...TONS of recommendations. I'm going with Cindy Cashdollar...or Scotty. (that's DeWitt Scott)
