Tonight, Thursday, May 31st, is The Philadelphia Blues Messengers final engagement of a month of Thursdays at The Blue Sky Jamaican restaurant and bar in E. Norriton in the Northern suburbs of Philadelphia. We will have two guest artists with us tonight. Steel guitarist extraordinaire, Lucky Oceans (http://www.luckyoceans.tv/), a Grammy winner and co-founder of the famous Western swing group Asleep at the Wheel. Lucky grew up in Philly and now resides in Australia, so this is a rare chance to catch him in this area. Also with us tonight will be dynamite R&B singer Lisa Chavous.

Blue Sky is on Germantown Pike just North of Swede Road. Come on out and have some gourmet Jamaican cuisine and stay for the music starting at 9:00 PM.

Our next scheduled performance will be at the West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, Saturday, June 23, 7:30 PM, opening for the Sun Ra Archestra.

Cheers,

If you have never heard Lucky play you have missed an incredible talent. We were "lucky" (no pun intended) to have Lucky appear with us in Vienna Virginia earlier this month where he sat in a bit on the Lap Steel and then later on the pedal steel. His talent is beyond belief and a great pleasure to watch him perform. Hey...he's also a fun guy to hang out with. Wish I were in a position to make this show because I know it will be a great one. If you are in the Philly area...do yourself a favor and get out to watch this.

It was quite a fine display of talent last night...
I got to meet Lucky and a more gracious person I think I have yet to have met.
Dave was quite impressive on the PSG- think slide guitar but different- going from "slide" lines into bending chords, some great rhythm comping too; and lucky was
Jammin' the blues on an old 10 string Eharp... what fun! Lucky kicked butt, and reached for the stratosphere a couple of times... awesome!

The Philadelphia Blues Messengers definitely "bring it" and the guest vocalist was a true blues shouter... man what a voice she has.

Too bad it was a school night and I had to leave 'fore the festivities were over.

Thanks for the heads up Dave Doggett! Hope to catch y'all again soon

Thanks for stoppin' by DVA. And thanks for the kind words. Being a week night, the crowd always thins out there after the first couple of sets. And once you've heard one of our sets, you've heard all our licks. After that we just put the same licks to different songs. It's the blues you know. Wink When our regular sax player, Byard Lancaster, is there, we get into some experimental blues/jazz fusion. Harold Smith, the conga, conch and didgeridoo player, plays soprano sax, and so we sometimes get three saxes going.

Lucky is just in town visiting relatives and doesn't have all his gear with him. He was awesome playing his EHarp (C6) through my Peavey Delta Blues. It was a real lesson sitting next to him. Lesson number one: don't be shy when reaching for the sky. Smile

Harold Smith books the acts there at the Blue Sky. For the next two months on Thursdays he will be drumming (regular drum set) with various of the top local jazz musicians. Harold for years was a pro on the NYC and international scene and is one of the most awesome jazz drummers you will ever see (nothing like his backup role with us). Maybe in late Summer or Fall The Blues Messengers will be back there.

P.S.: The club owner taped the shows, both the night I was gone and Jim Cohen played with Lucky, and the night I played with him. They are your typical sloppy live club recordings, but you can hear some great licks throughout. Unfortunately, the CD copies he gave me worked on his computer but not on any of my CD players. If we ever get that bug figured out, and with Jim and Lucky's permission, I might someday be able post some tracks.
