I have a Evans Steel Guitar Amp - FET 500, Custom LV

I have had it for a little over 20 years without any problems.

Now it starting to make a spuddering sound. The sound is not there when first turning it on, but only after being on a while. It is not continuous but off and on.

What is going on?

And What should I do?

I am an inexperienced amp tech, Crying or Very sad

DON IF YOU WOULD TAKE THE KNOBS OFF 1 AT A TIME AND PUT SOME ELECTRONIC CLEANER AND TURN THE KNOBS BACK AND FORTH A WHILE IT SHOULD STOP THE TROUBLE . I HAD THE SAME TROUBLE . SOUNDS GOOD. THANKS

Hi Lavelle,

I am assuming by knobs you mean the knobs that control the volume, bass, treble, reverb, etc.

Is that correct?

The knobs cannot be pulled off by hand, and I want to be careful not to break the knobs since they may be more brittle because of aging.

Any suggestions here?

Remember I am an amp illiterate!! Sad

Thanks for all your help. Smile

Aloha, Smile

If the Evans has an effects loop chances are the jacks in the effects loop are the problem and need at least cleaned up and more likely need replaced. Otherwise I think I would clean the input jacks and the next likely culprit is the connectors that plug the preamp into the power amp section. Those may need cleaned. You do have to do some disassembly to get to those connections, but it is not hard to do.

Don, since that amp is 20 years old, I'd strongly advise taking it in to a good amp tech for a thorough inspection.

It probably needs, at least, new power supply filter caps...maybe other things. If you value your amp, and want to keep it running faithfully for a bunch more years, have it serviced. That will also get the sputtering problem taken care of.
