Does anyone use those internet phone services like Vonage, ViaTalk, Skype? My daughter was thinking of hooking up to one in her room. I worry about power failures, 911 and that sort of thing. I know there is a lot of hype about these phone sites but are they really that great? drawbacks? advantages? hidden cost like long distance? |

I have the packet 8 internet phone service...very easy to setup and very reasonable...either $20 or $25 per month, with almost any kind of service like caller ID, Call waiting, call forwarding and many more and no long distance charges in the us and Canada. They do go down occasionally when there is a problem with the internet, however You can route you phone calls to your cell phones when the service is down. There is a lot of bang for the buck. We like ours.

If you do a lot of long distance calling they can save money, otherwise the regular telephone service is just as good and usually less expensive.
I have local phone service (Embarq) and for $32.15 per month, including taxes, I get caller ID and 60 minutes of long distance time. I never use the total 60 minutes. I also have RoadRunner cable internet and the local cable company, BrightHouse, offers internet telephone service with unlimited long distance calling for $39.95 plus tax (about $10 more per month including taxes) but to get that price you have to have other cable services. Not a deal for me, especially since I don't do much "toll" (long distance) calling. |
