Lately the CD drive in my pc does not auto-open when a CD is put in. I have to open it manually.
Also, I was playing a CD, took it out, and started playing songs directly from the hard drive.
A couple songs played from the HD, and suddenly back to back popup warnings saying the CD drive couldn't find the file. Was not playing from the CD drive.
The CD drive is just running quirky.
Any advice, any and all?
Thanks,

CD Drives are cheap. Buy or borrow another unit, power off, open the case, and replace the old CD drive with it, making sure the jumper on the back is set the same (Master, CS, or Slave). When you reboot into Windows plop an audio CD into it and see if it auto-plays it. If so, discard the old unit. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

And Wiz, say the new CD drive unit DOES not auto-open, then what?
So you think the unit has had it? What about going into Device Manager and trying 'disable/enable'?
I suppose the CD would play in the DVD drive? Right?

Chip, have you tried going to "my computer" then right click on the drive your havin the problem with and go to properties then click on the "auto play" tab. if this doesn't work then go to the devise manager and uninstall and restart the computer. |

There is a Windows Registry setting that either enables or disables autoplay in CDs. As Andy suggested, try the right-click AutoPlay option first. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll research the Reg key in question and inform you about how to check it and correct it, if necessary. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

OK, Andy & Wiz.
I'm gettin' somewhere so far, but...
In PROPERTIES on the CD drive what is listed is this:
AUTOPLAY - (menu window) MUSIC FILES - (actions) PLAY in WMP; open folder to view files in Windows Explorer; take no action
I wish to play the CD in Creative Media Source (SoundbBlaster)and the only way SB pops up is if I change the menu item to MUSIC CD.
So then I opt for SB in SELECT AN ACTION TO PERFORM,
click APPLY and OK.
Put in a CD and up pops a page that displays the tracks on the CD with the SB icon next to them. But SB does not open and auto-play the music. Still have to do it manually.
I go back and check the AUTOPLAY settings and they have revertd back to the PLAY IN WMP setup.
I don't mind if I have to replace the drive, but it's also a burner drive as well, so I guess would cost more than just a common CD drive.
Thanks fellas,

Chip, if you want SB to be your default player for mp3's and Cd's go back to the CD drive properties and click on the "autoplay" tab again then make sure you check "select an action to perform" then in the little window where you saw music files click on the down arrow to the right and choose "music cd" and pick SB for the player and then ok. |

My DVD player quit working a few weeks ago. The battery was fading out in my computer so I thought I'd replace the DVD player at the same time.
I got a Samsung 18x18x DVD Ram. A Super-writemaster, double layer DVD burner with Light scribe labeling ability, and Nero software. $85 which I thought was a good price from Best Buy, and I could take it home and not have to wait for some online order. |

Andy,
That's what I already tried. That's what I tried to explain above.
It just opens a page which shows what tracks are on the CD and does not play.
When I re-check my Autoplay settings they go back to default.
ie - my new settings aren't holding.
That sounds like a good deal Ken, except my DVD drive is working OK, it's the CD drive that's the problem. This emachines T2984 PC has both CD and DVD drives.
Yeah, I just tried it again and nothing this time; not even the track listing page. And the settings didn't hold either.
I guess I'll try disable/enable in device manager and reboot and see what happens then. _________________ Chip

Chip, check out this site and see if anything there can help you. It was designed primarily for Dell's but there's a lot of it that pertains to any PC.
It's maintained by the CD/DVD "guru" on the Dell users support forum.

Thanks Jack... I'm still scanning your site as we speak.
Wiz...maybe you can give me the registry procedure now.
I put a CD in the DVD drive just now, and it failed completely, where-as before it worked like it should.
So, NOW, neither drive works like it should. Wouldn't this be a clue as to a bigger problem?
What do I know?
Thanks again everyone. _________________ Chip
