Hi
I'd love to be able to afford a revelation Pre-amp, but alas I can't. I've been working towards a 3u rack with a Lexicon MPX1, and a Matrix 1u power amp (175 watts per channel) and a pre-amp, and driving 2 15" widows. As I can't afford a revelation I searched for an alternative. The Lexicon is wonderful (thanks Ken for the help) and the amp is quiet and powerful. I came across a Marshall 9001 3 valve, stereo pre-amp from the late 80's early 90's. WOW what a superb unit and relatively cheap (£90).
1u in size, has a fab 5 band graghic that can dial up almost any sound, has a powerful clean channel, and a channel that can be as dirty as you like with voicings and drive controls. push buttons for selecting channels (you can use a foot control if you can find one). master controls on the channels and most important of all a stereo effects loop with two rotary controls on the back to adjust input and output levels. It also has an effects mix control on the front and a master output level control.
On the back it has a cabinet simulator filter switch for di work. A 3 way selector for controlling output level and a line input jack and jack ins and outs. It's a superb piece of kit. It uses ecc83/12ax7 valves. It's the MGP9001 by Marshall. They aren't made anymore and I'm reliably informed the JMP1(a midi pre-amp) and the 9004(Which isn't a valve pre-amp and has a wall wart)don't have the sound,eq, or versatility that the 9001 has. I'm really impressed with this unit for the quality of build and sound.and given the price, it's incredible value. If you can borrow one and play around with it (it takes a little understanding and experimentation)it's worth the effort. You can get on the Marshall site and download a series 9000 handbook.
Don't be fooled by the Marshall reputation for dirty sounds, they are there if you want them, but you can dial up a crystal clear sound with this unit.
