I've been a big fan of Mstislav Rostropovich for a long time. I really love his work with living composers. Here is my mangling of a cello piece Britten wrote for him:

He was amazing. Such rare musical genius. I always remember how fast a tempo he played the Bach Cello Suites at. Not sure I like it that sprightly. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike,
I'm a Pierre Fornier Bach cello suite guy myself. But you have got to hear the cello suite that Britten wrote for "Slava". Its one of my favorite recordings ever. _________________ Bob |

Bob--how would you characterize the Fornier performance? I have the Yo Yo Ma CDs--the older one, not the more recent recording--and it's pretty good but not quite what I want to hear. My ideal is less romantic, less 'passionate' yet living & breathing--not etudes. Many recordings that I've heard are too interpretive, too much rubato indulgence.
While we're at it, I'd love a recommendation for the violin works too. I've got this guy Shlomo Mintz and it's just not, dare I say, the way I would play it. |

Britten and Rostropovich, great combination. Your rendition is nice, Bob. |

Jon,
I can't listen to Yo Yo Ma's cello suites. Major cheese factor. Fornier's are effortless sounding and coming straight from the pure place Bach opens the door to. _________________ Bob |

As luck would have it, I found Bach/Fournier at Second Spin. It'll be interesting to see how my ideas of Bach compare with yours. |

Oh yeah? Well my Bach can beat up your Bach!
Just to keep on topic, I saw Rostropovich peform when I was a kid. Unfreakin' real. A true master. _________________ Patrick |

Anyone who can play the notes of Bach's cello suites is okay in my book. One of the wonderful things about that music is that it can be interpreted in so many ways. I have Rostopovich, Edgar Meyer and Yo Yo Ma (the DVD set) in my collection. I can't say that I prefer one over another - they are all beautiful. _________________ -๐๐๐- (admin) - Robert P. I have had the pleasure of shooting video of
Mr. Ma and Mr.Rostopovich.
Yeah I was paid to see them!
I spoke with Mr. Ma and he said Rostopovich was
his idol and role model, and he was thrilled
every time they met.
When I played in the symphony Bach ALWAYS kicked my butt,
even more than Beethoven.
Mr. Rostopovich played Bach with supreme panachรฉ and taste.
But never seemed to be overloaded, or having to TRY too hard to do it.
And then you would here him play REALLY tough compositions
and do it butter smooth. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

My wife plays violin in the Luxembourg Philharmonic and she actually got to play with Rostropovich when he guested as soloist on an Elgar cello concerto. What a great memory that is of a true musical genius.
