Part of me wants to go electric on this, otherwise I could get a cheap guitar and set it up for lap playing I suppose.
Don't really like the sound of resonators. Not when I'm playing them myself anyway.
There are cheap, probably Chinese, lap steels on the market. Would that be a very bad choice?

Terje I would avoid cheapos like Artisan or Harley Benton...
I can't tell for sure because I haven't even seen one, but all I can see is a cheaply made ugly looking steel, with a cheap Strat pickup on it.
For a few bucks more you can get a vintage lap steel which has much more "mojo", a better construction, a better pickup.
Check out the old european brands too. Hofner especially made some nice steels. |

I bought an Artisan for $59 new. Not a bad for the money. I used it on a 6 week show gig and it did the job. Sold it for more than I paid for it after the gig was over.
The only thing I did not like about it was the plastic fingerboard reflected light from the stage overheads. |

I am thinking it failed because the file was too big. I recall having the same problem with emails to Denmark.

I'll be checking out what's available in the city I live in.There are lap steels in Stockholm, not many but they can be found. As for the picture file... I have a hotmail address, can't take very much.

Thanks for the links Max. Yeah, I know Vintage Guitars have a few but the prices are stupid. The only good thing with that store is that if you have a guitar to sell you can put it there and hope that someone with more money than sense walks in.
I'll check out JAM's site. There are a few more stores around Stockholm that do have them. The offer i got here wasn't bad either.

I played a Fender Kingman with a nut riser and a baby humbucker for years; sorry I sold it; it had a nice warm sound.
So there are the two alternatives you've described. To go electric, I wouldn't sell the Artisan short. As Bill Hatcher says, their popularity makes them saleable if you try it and decide to go another route.
I would have bought one, but ran across a used Dynalap, which is an excellent instrument, well built, and lots of sustain. |

The Artisans are actually the best bang for the $$ on the market. Get one and add a Fralin or Lollar pickup and they sound lovely. The string spacing is a bit tight though. I have done these for a few friends and they work out really well.

The one to really aim for (IMHO) if you can afford it, is the Sierra laptop. Many forumites would agree I think... |
