JERRY BYRD Fan Club is for EVERYONE!

Hi there! I was quite impressed that over 500 Forumites read the last post about HANK SNOW and JERRY BYRD. But you know what? No where near that number is actually dropping in to listen to the fabulous sounds and great free steel guitar instruction that is being offered there. HOW COME?
Just wondering........ One doesn't have to emulate Jerry's style of playing to listen to the site. If it's real authentic steel guitar technique you desire, you'll find it displayed in abundance here.

An olde one that JERRY BYRD and Mercury records put together while aiming at the juke box market, back sometime during the early '60's as best I can recall, is waiting for your visit on the JBFC site.

Red Perkins (ever heard of him?) does a great vocal on Jerry's Music page. It has some of that old rock solid Jerry Byrd, Richenbacher steel guitar sounds that I'm sure you olde time JB fans will enjoy. Yepp!
It was on King label? Remember that one?

About Ray has one of my earlier efforts that I hope you'll enjoy.

Give us a listen!

Ray: I've never been able to listen to any music on your Jerry Byrd site.

Others, have arranged your site, using %%%% signs, and I have used them to listen a couple of times.

I have version 11 (eleven) of WMP, too.

So what gives?

HELP!

I was hoping that some of the Forumites that have successfully bridged the gap might be willing to step in and answer your questions in a factual manner.

I'm not a computer guru, 'tho' I wish I was.

I've got folks that listen regularly and they have all different kinds of equipment....and software.

Anyone have any explanation?

I have noticed that even if you have the appropriate Windows Media Player ... you need to be using Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser.

I use Mozilla Foxfire ... and when I go to Ray's wonderful site ... I don't get the little "player" embedded on the page.

That's why ... I have my Internet Explorer set to www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com ... as my "Home Page" ... so when I wanna listen to the best ... I just click on my IE icon.

There may be a "plug-in" for Mozilla that will display the embedded player ... but its just as easy for me to have my IE dedicated to Ray's site.

Maybe this bit of info will help ... I hope

Hi Ray, I always enjoy the Jerry Byrd website and the music you offer for our listening pleasure. I noticed though that when I tried to click on the player to hear "Elmers Tune" I got a pop up window that required a user name and password. Is this a requirement now? I never got this popup before.

Ray
I have tried to set your music posts out were anyone could
click and listen ! Sense your web page went down , and you
rebuilt it ! I have been unable to reach your source page !! before
I could cut and past the music to the site URL and presto ! it would
play . a couple weeks ago I hit a snag that b0b helped out with by
supplying the right " hexidecimal " ( in suppository form )% ( joke) But it
worked after that . if you haven't seen that , its at .

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=106953

Maybe this would help some one that is at least two clicks above a box
of rocks when it comes to how these darn'd contraptions work .

Then again ! maybe some one could help you figure out what the
deal is , and make changes ! I for one enjoy what you do for us non ped
junkies .

What is up with that?

Short answer: I don't visit the Jerry Byrd Fan Club site as often as I'd like because your site is unfriendly. It requires a combination of software that I don't use.

Long answer:Technical discussion here. Put on your tinfoil hat before proceeding.

The HTML editor that Ray is using (Microsoft Front Page 5.0) is optimized for use with the Microsoft Windows operating system, the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, and the Microsoft Windows Media Player version 9. The editor creates HTML which is not understood by other browsers and operating system versions, so anyone not using WMP9 and MSIE on Windows will not be able to see or hear the MP3 files as they are currently linked on Ray's pages.

A simple link to the MP3 file stored on Ray's web site would look like this:

Code: Select all

http://www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com/Music/Elmer's Tune.mp3
Because of the way ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS work, a space in a file name is the same as the end of that file name. So what the browser sees is this:

Code: Select all

http://www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com/Music/Elmer's
Note the "Tune.mp3" doesn't appear.

To get around that, HTML uses a substitution code for things like spaces (%20), slashes (%F3) and the like). Substituting the space character in the file name with a %20 like this should take care of the problem:

Code: Select all

http://www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com/Music/Elmer's%20Tune.mp3
So what I do, being the geek that I am, is:
1. Visit the Jerry Byrd Fan Club web page.
2. View the source of the web page.
3. Find the reference to the MP3 file in the source code.
4. Create a similar reference to the MP3 file in another browser window or tab.
5. Wait for the file to load into the new browser tab.
6. Save the file to my hard drive for further listening.

Currently the Music directory is password protected, so even if I wanted to create a direct link to the MP3 files, I cannot.

If you were to use a HTML editor that created a more friendly web site, I'd certainly visit more often. As it is, I have lots of other places that don't have the limitations your site currently does.

For the record, I'm using a Macintosh computer running OS X 10.4.9 with the Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3 browser.

I also don't visit for the same reason Brad has exponded upon... the proprietary format of the webcontent is anathema.

another alternative I think is if Ray would consider naming his files without spaces or punctuation.. example: elmerstune.mp3.
then perhaps the links created by MicroSloth Front Page might work for others...?

worth trying on a couple of files as an experiment.

I have the same problem that Rick Aiello has. Now I think I'll try his solution. Thanks Rick! Never say I'm not a Jerry Byrd fan!

As I've stated before, the page loads just fine and always has but just recently the user name and password problem has been the problem. I was un aware of it bein down recently. Ray's page is awesome and I love the music on there but like others myself included computer know how can sometimes be a little overwhelming I wish I knew more about it so I could give him a hand.

Pass word problem

You know..... I've done NOTHING WHATSOEVER....that would cause the JERRY BYRD FAN CLUB visitor to have to come up with a password or anything else.

I'm still doing it just as I have since it was first set-up about three years ago.

A lot of fine folks are visiting it from day to day with no problem whatsoever. Others, well, are having difficulties.

I'm truly very sorry that ANYONE is having a problem getting in to visit the site and/or hear JERRY's fabulous olde music.

I don't know what do. Trying to make EVERYONE happy is NOT within my 'puter skills. I appreciate Ric's comments/suggestions, as I do Brad and others. Perhaps together, we'll jointly get a system up that EVERYONE will be able to enjoy.

Jerry Byrd Fan Club Problems

I am Bill Chaviers son Marshall. I have done dads website for over ten years now. This is my opinion of the entire problem that Ray is experiencing, SHORT and SIMPLE, Brad is exactly correct. The problem is not a simple cure. We are as diverse in our operating systems and media players as we are in our opinions and desire for different types of computer demands. Some need strictly a "USER FREINDLY" computer and over all system. Some of us need far greater computer capabilities. An example is my fathers tabs, I had to take an existing program MS Word 10 years ago and make it do things that my father needed. It took me 6 months at 20 hours a day to get past text addressing issues so that his tabs fell in line as he wanted them to. Whew that made for heated discussions. The point is here, even if I made the tabs downloadeable dads computer is specifically designed to meet his needs, therefore when we send them digitally, depending on the system and programs the person opening the file uses the problems are far different. I tried to explain the fixes but after an all month affair we decided e-mailing or downloading was far to difficult and disappointing for most to endure. That is why dad sends all tabs by snail mail. The problems are the same in principle.

Until there is a STANDARD media format that offers a complete sound solution for free using all operating systems and media formats, follow Brad's advice and GREAT JOB BRAD!! and Ray keep up the good work you are doing. I will make one suggestion, maybe an FTP site with the MP3 format files is the simplest of all answers. That would allow everyone to use their own media players after they download and save the files to their system. Good Luck

Ray I also have a problem with your incompatibility, and also have to view the source code.
BUT I PERSEVERE as I enjoy the content

One question, if you can master the addition of BOLD in the above post, why can't you post a clickable link on your web page to the audio ?
It's not very much further removed than what you do already.

Basil..........your comments are well taken.........

by Ray Montee
Basil, please tell me, step by step, just exactly HOW TO DO THAT!

That seems to me to be a very simple way to things but I don't know how.

As you can see here, I've not mastered the "BOLD" stuff either. This could be a real struggle for me.

"My incompatability?" I've had six wives that didn't like it either! So what's new? Take care.

I've had six wives
Don't worry about it Ray, although I didn't know it at the time, I've had many more than six wives, mainly other guy's ones !! and only for a few minutes or moments, depending on the proximity of the spouse !!

It's part of the job in a band, it's "Expected"
It's quite a help to the vibrato !!

As for the music files on your web site, there are those around who already jump in and lend a helping hand, I just wonder if it's well advised, I know it's well intentioned.
It's very basic HTML. I'll send you a private message (PM) about it.
Baz.

I just discovered that if I completly disable Firefox,
then bring up IE with Ray's site as the home page, no password thingy and Jerry's audio comes right through. If I let Firefox run then the password comes back!
