| Do strings, like batteries, have a shelf life? Will they last forever if not stretcheed or open to the elements? |

I change mine at least once a month, I play extensivly for about 3 hours per night. Some people I know change them once a week, but they are studio/road players full time.

Robert, I don't know as a fact, but have been told to always buy strings where they get fresh inventory in, so apparently there is some possibility of deterioration "on the shelf". I have purchased old strings before for my 6-stringer and found tiny rust spots or pits visible to the eye. Same way I had a set forgotten down under some stuff and found them long time later, had the same kind of tiny imperfections; wouldn't hold tune, intonation bad. FWIW...  |

| I've used strings that I bought 25 years ago. As long as they have never been used, and are not rusted or corroded in any way, they play just as good as strings I bought yesterday. But they have to have been stored well packaged in a dry place (which may eliminate places in the Southeast or near salt air). If there is any rust or corrosion from humidity, toss them. |

The Jagwire string inventory here at Forum Central turns over rapidly. It's a constant struggle just to keep everything in stock. If you want "fresh", this is the place!

Handy tip, keep your strings in a Tupperware box, keep's out the damp ,.
We are having a Tupperware party next week all welcome.. |

| Yes, they do have a shelf life if not properly stored. I opened up a box of Gibson strings from the 50s a few months ago, and they were rusty, still inside the sleeves. |

These are '50's bought to go with my MultiHarp.
No visible rust..
The next time I record I'll use the MultiHarp and try a set of the "Old" strings.

The boxes look just like the ones I have, except mine were made for acoustic guitar.
I also have some packed for zither, which are in a similar condition. I have to say that they were given to me at a luthiers' meeting by someone who was throwing them out.
Okay, Basil, throw a set on your MultiHarp. Hopefully, as you say, they're in better condition than mine, otherwise you'll get a great twang when you depress the pedals. |
