This one is called "Tho' I Tried" by Wesley Tuttle. Features a nice break by Joaquin followed by a chordal solo. Has all the elements of a Joaquino solo--the great phrasing, tone, and that augmented lick he throws in over the V7 chords.

Go to http://www.myspace.com/mikeneer and click on the last song in the music player. While you're there, have a look around. New music (by me) coming soon....

Thanks Mike! I enjoyed that as I do everything else you've posted on your myspace. Every time you post a song featuring Murphy, I sit with my headphones trying to decipher what his tone might have been like if one were sitting next to him in the studio. Are there players alive today that witnessed/know his live tone and emulate it?

Thanks Mike , Excellent steel playing by Murphy !! Really enjoyed that old song !! I have a few old "78s" by Wes Tuttle featuring Merle Travis on guitar that are good also. Also have a couple by Merle Travis featuring Joaquin Murphy recorded back in 1946 and 47 that are really good !! Those old "78s" wouldn't sound right without the scratch and hiss !! Really enjoyed your "Dirt Road Life" also!! Great picking and sound on that old tri-cone !! Thanks for sharing !! Eddie "C" ( the old geezer )

Thanks, Eddie. Yeah, that one's pretty scratchy, but I've never been spoiled by that sort of stuff. I still love all my 78s. I have my grandfather's 78s (mostly Jazz and Swing) and when I listen to them, it makes me feel closer to him.

I recently purchased a decent collection of Hawaiian 78s from Mike Scott. I've yet to really sit down and listen to them, but there's some goodies in there.

I've had this post by CC Johnson tucked away in the ol' memory file ever since first reading it way back when. Took a minute to search for it again, but there it is.

What made it so memorable to me was imagining subbing for Murphy in the Spade Cooley band and having the privilege to observe and learn from this master first hand.

Good observations on his tunings and amps of choice:

What a GREAT, Great post.

That olde Bigsby (I'm assuming) really bursts thro'!
His single string work was always so dynamic and clear and then he'd drop down on the bass strings or chords and the mix was really something to behold

Thanx for sharing!
