I want to start by thanking Cohm for getting the first Kansas City area steel guitar jam together yesterday afternoon in Prairie Village, Kansas. Also, I want to thank everyone else for their contributions too, especially Bobby Demoss for getting this 10 string monster in tune for us.
I have great news to report after taking my youngest grandson to the Kansas Steel Guitar Jam session in Baxter Springs, Kansas last Sunday and my oldest grandson to the KC jam yesterday, both have verbally expressed their interest in learning to play the instrument. I cannot tell each of you who were at these jam sessions how much your contribution to their affirmation to pursue learning the pedal steel guitar means to me. Any of you that know me, understand what a traditional country music fan I am and I firmly believe the only way to keep it alive is to bring young people to traditional country events and get them interested in it too. |

Great to see you Kenny. My hat's off to you for buying your young grandsons Carter Starters. What an age to get up and running on steel ! You are the answer to the next generations. Hopefully we can get together again in June for another.
If anyone is curious on how things went, here is a video of some of the procedings

Chuck Abend and Bill Jobes are the only ones I recognize. Who are the others? I guess I've been away from KC too long (November will be 11 years). |

Jack,
Playing the green Emmons is Roger Hurst. Player with computer screen in background (band-in-the-box running) is Bruce Zumsteg. |

I think the split front Zum player is Bruce himself. |

John, Yes you are absolutely correct, Bruce the man was there and brought his laptop with tons of Band-in-the-box tracks for us to play. We might have been fumbling around without Bruce's help and his on-the-fly adjustments to the sound tracks and PA system as we played.
Everyone pitched in to make this event a go. Tommy Helms brought his PA system for Bruce to plug the laptop into. Tom Anderson brought all kinds of goodies and barbeque to eat, Chuck Abend brought a CD player to hook up to the PA, Roger Hurst brought a cooler full of ice cold sodas plus his wife's brownies.

Colm, Thanks. It's probably been 20 years since I've seen Roger - didn't recognize him at all. I should have recognized Bruce.
I'll be back in KC in September. I hope I can find some jams while I'm there. I do have to go to Bill Owen's Tuesday jams with Ray Uhl and I'm supposed to jam with Lonnie Harper. |

My grandsons have their pedal steel guitar set up in the living room and thanks to Austin Stewart's first meeting with my youngest grandson Trenton, they already call it a pedal steel guitar and correct others who call it simply a steel guitar. I believe they are going to make a good attempt at it anyway.
Looks like Grandad Burford (that's me) may have his hands full playing rhythm guitar for two pedalers. |

Being new to the whole Steel jam thing myself, do you guys send out a song list a few weeks before the get together, or are you guys playing standards that are expected?
I watched both videos and enjoyed seeing and hearing all the different setups. Some of you guys come loaded for bear.
I was also glad to see Bruce playing a Zum |

Bill
This was the first time in this situation for about half the guys and it had been a long time since some of the other guys have done this.
It came together fairly quick so there was not too much time for planning other than to make sure we had the room, equipment, and tracks and give it a try. We did ask in advance for particular songs and key that each player would like to play so that those songs would be ready in the band-in-the-box.
For future meetings we are going to try to have an advance set list with each player having choosen a song or two so that some of us can practice-up. This first meeting defaulted to some standards with a few requests from players sprinkled in. Guys like me had to just hack through and any video of me would be too painful to watch.
We would particularly like to make sure the beginning to intermediate players choose some material they know or are working on in advance because they have not had the experience to know many of the standards. |
