This may have been covered before but I couldn't find it. Who played on this tune?
The harmony licks just blow me away.

Eddie, The steel player is Sonny Garrish. Also listen for the Gene Watson song (w/Garrish): "More Than You'll Ever Know." You won't be disappointed!

Hi Guys:

Sonny did cut many of Gene's hit records after Lloyd. However, in the early 80s Gene started using his own band, The Farewell Party Band on all his records. I worked for Gene for ten years from '77 to '87. I played on "Got No Reason Now for Goin' Home" and it was the first recording of Gene's on which I used my new ZumSteel. I used a new, Nashville 400 and we cut that recording and the entire album at The Sound Emporium in Nashville, Jim Williamson, engineer. Prior to that I'd been using my Emmons push-pulls and a Session 400 on Gene's recordings. Danny Rainwater played lead guitar so it was he and I doing the twin stuff.

My hat is off to Gene for using us on his records. The only others I can recall using their own bands in the studio at that time were Ricky Skaggs and Waylon.

In all I believe I did 7 albums with Gene and about 15 top-ten hits. Very cool. Thanks so much Gene !!!

Thanks so much for your kind words Eddie. I also have to mention that it was an honor to follow in the footsteps of Lloyd Green and Sonny Garrish on Gene's stuff. The innovative, musical talent of those two fellows is awesome and incredible. In addition to that, they're great guys and I'm proud to know them.

My apologies to you, Mr. Olson,and hats off to you and guitarist Danny Rainwater for creating one of the most popular and often played parts ever in country music. One of the best shows I ever saw was Gene Watson and the Farewall Party Band w/Tiny Olson on steel guitar at the Stockyard night club in Nashville.(early 80's?) Hit after hit after hit. It was everything Country Music can be.

I was certain Sonny Garrish did not play the steel on that song. Sonny definitely has his own sound and it sets him apart from other steel players who do session work. Thanks Tiny for letting us know you were the steeler on that project.

Folks, get on "You Tube" Scroll down to the bottom and put in Gene Watsons name. There you will see and hear Tiny playing on some great hits with Gene "Live". They don't come much better as Justin Wilson might say "I Garontee youse" Check in particular the "Church St. Station Orlando vids"

There are a few from Church St. Station, which have Tiny and Danny. I always remember how good they sounded, but I forgot just how good the backup singers are in that era of the Farewell Party Band.

Just in case no-one recognizes him... I must point out that our bassist at that time with The Farewell Party band was none-other-than, Tony Booth. Two great singers in one show was very cool.

of my late teen years and I knew then that they were classics. That is music that I still listen to today.

I was wondering about that. I met you last year at Scotty's and part of our visit was about your road and studio work with Gene. That one is a favorite of mine, and I suspect a fav of most GW fans.


Hag used the Strangers in the studio a lot during those years.

I guess I'm genewatsonfan number three. The heyday with Tiny on steel was the greatest although I would walk more than a mile to see the Gene Watson show right now. I think one of the best examples of that 'heyday' is exemplified in this song, 'Memories to Burn'. Check out the steel player and his attack during the ride. Man, just play like that would be any steeler's dream. Great job:

Thanks again for all the nice words guys. Luckily for me I've been about 80lbs. smaller for the past 20 yrs. than I was in those TV shows. That puts me in the "stealthy" 300+ lbs. range these days !!

I'd also like to put in a plug for my buddy Corky Owens who is Gene's road steelman these days. Corky has actually been with Gene for quite sometime now and is the band leader. Aside from being a superb player, Corky is a heck of a nice guy. Be sure to check them out if they come to your area. You'll be delighted by Gene's great singing (the guy still has it to say the least), Corky's fantastic playing and the rest of the wonderful musicianship of The Farewell Party Band.
