I've always enjoyed Dave Dudley's tunes. Last nite they played a tune of his on XM-13, and I realized that he has a signature guitar sound, that once you hear it, you know right away the tune is a Dave Dudley tune. The guitar string/note makes kind of a springy/slappy sound, unlike anything on any other record I've ever heard.

Is he playing the guitar that makes these notes? Anybody know what special sauce is used to get that sound?

Thanks all...

Jimmy Covard sp? started playing that lick on Six Days on the road, Its done by snapping the string with your middle finger while holding the pick normal, In 1968 I started with Dave and did that lick on several tunes including "There Ain't No Easy Run".

Richard, what did he use for a guitar? Wasn't it a 335?

If I remember correctly it was a Gibson ES150. The body was a bit wider than a 335 and had a master volume. Great guitar but bad on feedback. I also used a Tele for awhile when I worked for Dave.

I was the first steel player to work with Jimmy Colvard, in 1958 Jimmy at age 15,was leader on several Package shows here in Mn. we backed such artists as, George Jones,Marvin Rainwater,Bobby Lord, Wanda Jackson,& Norma Jean, Six Days on the Road was recorded at Kay-Bank studios in Minneapolis, I'm quite sure the year was 1964, shortly after that, Jimmy moved to Nashville, & became the #1 Session Guitar player, Jimmy developed that Popping style that he played on Six Days! Fond Fond memories!
