Using the balanced output jack in the back of the amp I went through the board last night. It sounded great coming through the mains and through the monitors, but I could not hear any sound coming from the speaker in the amp. Is this normal?

Using the XLR balanced output should not effect the output of the speaker. Make sure that you don't have a set of headphones plugged into the PREAMP OUT/HEADPHONE OUTPUT jack as this will shut the internal 12" speaker off.

Other than this, the symptom is abnormal and the amp needs benchchecking.

Thanks Mike. I tried using the XLR output at home and it did not defeat the speaker in the amp. Maybe the monitors were up so loud that I could not hear the speaker in the amp. I'll try it again next week and get back to you if it is not working correctly.

The XLR output will "not" defeat the internal speaker. The XLR is designed to allow you to send this balanced output to a mixing console or recorder. But it will not defect the internal speaker, only the PREAMP OUT/CD INPUT will do that.

My marshall DSL401 has a speaker emulator plug. when I use it my amp speaker is shut off.It lets you use your Amp as a preamp. See if the peavey has this output. Could be the problem. It is for the purpose of recording and going into a mixer when your playing a big venue and your Amp don't have the power to keep up it works great and you don't lose your amp quality.
