I saw an old Fender volume/tone pedal on e-bay the other day and it really got me to thinking. I think the volume is controlled just like any volume pedal, and the tone is controlled with a side to side movement of the foot. Is this how some of the old timers in the fifties used to get the swelling sound that I can't seem to duplicate? Anybody know or even better--has anybody ever used one?...Thanks

Yes, and yes. Their appeal is quite limited today, though. Very rarely will you see a pedal steel player using one. It happens a little more frequently with non-pedal players, but it's still not an "everyday" occurence to see one in use. They're more of a "novelty" thing, really.

I've used a Fender Vol/Tone pedal for years. It's all I use. I guess I'm one of those novelty players. I play old western swing and honky tonk. For Jerry Byrd type swells I prefer the tone knob on my steel, but with the pedal you can pick a 6th chord and get a sound like a section of muted trumpets. Or you can crash the bar on a 13th chord and get that cool Speedy West doo-wah effect. Downside - they may require some maintenance from time to time.

I have used a Fender Vol/Tone pedal for a while since I picked one up on eBay for a song. It was still in the original box and I would guess that the Allen Bradley pots are both original. I use it with my pedal steel and my Tele.

If you get the opportunity to pick one up at a good price - go for it.

What would you consider a "good price?"

I paid the equivalent of $100 for mine on eBay and it's worth every penny.
