I stumbled upon a gem last night in Beaumont, TX! I was there to play Whiskey River (the club AND the song, ha, with Zona Jones). I had time to kill before our show and a friend from over there took me to see Brit Godwin on guitar, Bubba Moore on upright bass, Huey Buxton on fiddle, and a great drummer that I did not know, who play every Thurs. night at McKenzie's Pub from 7PM til' 10PM. It is an intimate venue with good food and drink, family owned.

As some of you may know, Brit and Bubba are Tracy Byrd alumni. They were playing some of the best western swing and classic country that I've heard from any band, anywhere!

So if you ever find yourself anywhere near Beaumont, TX on a Thursday, and if you like REAL country and western swing, played by some Texas' finest "velvet hammer" musicians, then stop in at Mckenzie's!
Very Happy

I might mention that Britt has been playing around Beaumont since he was 15 years old. We used to have him on the "Charlie Pruitt Show" at the historic Jefferson Theatre when he was just a pup. Bubba and Britt were with Tracy Byrd when he first went on the road and were in his band for about 10 years. Huey Buxton is a legend around Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. He has also played at the TSGA with Buck Grantham and others. I agree with Jody that these guys play great music. Also got to see Jody last night with Zona Jones. It was a great fast moving show and Jody played so well on an Emmons D-10 push-pull using a little delay and a Nashville 400.

Thanks Doug! It was a real pleasure to meet you. I might be making a trip over your way again soon to do a Thurs. night at the pub with Brit and the guys...if so I'll let you know when and we can have a bite together and hang out under less chaotic circumstances, haha.

Also, you are welcome to come play at the SETSGA meetings in Katy - first Sundays. Or just come listen, but we really need more players.

Jody, thanks for the invite and anytime you are coming this way let me know. would love to visit and talk music with you. I'll try to get over to Katy soon and bring my guitar. Would love to steal some licks from you guys. Brandon told me that he really enjoys taking lessons from you and is excited about learning to play steel. I think he has got the bug.

Cool, John! I'll try to make it over there that evening. I'd like to meet you in person. I would have let you know about it sooner, but I just sort of stumbled on it through an acquaintance this week; I had no idea those guys were even still playing on a regular basis.

It's a well-kept secret, I guess. Laughing
