Went to the Grand Opening of the RFD Network Theater in Branson tonight..... Willie Nelson was their first guest... No Steel Guitar... Waaaaaaaaaah.
Loretta Lynn is supposed to appear pretty regular in the near future. Does anyone know who her steelman is? Surely she must have one !!! |

Well, I'm sorry to say that this doesn't shock me as the way country music and the use of steel guitar seems to be in certain areas. I personally have not been able to get a job locally here in Pigeon Forge, TN for over 5 years. Most shows either don't use steel at all or have players who must play more than one instrument. The biggest shock though is that there is a show in Dollywood that brings in Grand Ole Opry stars, such as: Jack Green, Jeannie Seely, Jim Ed Brown, Ray Pillow and on and on, but they won't hire a steel guitar in the backup band. Things have really changed as I can remember when I was on the road in the sixties and seventies that I've worked many times with name artists where the steel guitar was the only lead instrument in the band. I worked in a club in Milwaukee, WI in 1965 seven nights a week where we were the house band and backed name artists from Nashville and again the steel guitar was the only lead instrument in the band. For some reason, many people I've talked to who are hiring musicians nowadays for a country band think of steel guitar only as a "novelty instrument" to play a slide or chime every now and then. I'll shut up now as I get carried away on this subject as I never dreamed that steel guitar would become this way in country music. I was even told one time at a show in this area that they didn't like steel guitar because it looked bad on stage to sit down when you played.

Mr. Wallace,
I read the posts from the TSGA and I'm glad to hear that you are recovering and that everyone enjoyed your playing. It is sad indeed that the direction country music has taken has left the steel guitar on another path. I know that music changes, but country music was made great by the steel guitar and its players in my opinion. I also believe that one should dance with the one who brought you so to speak. I grew up listening to classic traditional country music. George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Eddie Arnold, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzel, Sonny James, Buck Owens, & Loretta Lynn just to name a few and the list goes on and on. I knew who they were and recognized them when they sang. Today, to me, country artists all sound alike and I can't distinguish one from another. I also would not walk across the street to a free concert if they offered. This is my opinion and I hope I haven't offended anyone. Country music without a steel guitar makes no sense to me whatsoever. I wonder if the people who told you it looked bad on stage to sit down at the steel to play, feel the same way about the piano and keyboards. Bring on the Steel and turn it up loud!!
P.S.
Mr.Wallace you said you couldn't get work locally for over 5 years. If they won't let you play, they need their head examined at the very least.

Herby; Time has taken it's toll on steel guitar and it's players in different ways. However, while it certainly is a shame to watch it, there are still many of us left that could care less what other's opinions are of the instrument and it's players. You and many other exceptional players, like you, have contributed countless hours of enjoyment to folks like myself. And, those same players had a lot to do with keeping steel players like me working and doing something I love. All those hits that included lead steel, forced others to have us in a band somewhere along the line, if they wanted their music to sound like the record. So, thank you, John Hughey, Tom Brumley, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day and countless others that led the way. They all helped me eat a few extra steaks along the way, while those hits kept coming. _________________ Sho Pro SD10 and Nashville 400 & 112 |

Billy, thanks for the heads-up on Janie next month. If you are in town April 15th, come on down to our Ozark Jam Session. There will be lots of good food because we are having a bake sale and auction to raise money for the Steel Show in July.
Herbie, thanks for your post. You are a real inspiration to most steel players. I attended one of your first Seminars in the 70's in Concord, California. Tom Bradshaw sure was good to us newbie's back then. He got all the best Steel Players to come through Concord and play for us along with instructional seminars. |

That really sucks big time you know it? It doesn't surprise me that a lot of acts don't carry a steel. Probably most of them don't know a steel guitar from a steel rail. I've had people ask me, "What is that piano thing you are playing". Piano thing? When I tell them it is a pedal steel guitar they say, "Oh, I really like to hear a steel played in bluegrass music". Give me a break people. I've actually had people ask me how they get that pretty slide sound out of a guitar. I tell them it's a pedal steel guitar and not a regular Spanish electric guitar. Then they are really confused. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to answer questions. I have totally kissed off todays' so-called country. It ain't country. It's lawyer music. That's who runs the whole show now. I figure by 2010 acts will have a P.A. system with CD background music and will not take any musicians on the road with them. You laugh. But hide and watch. |

It was the taping of the first episode of the new Ralph Emery show. (I talked with Shotgun Red last week.) Ralph will have a new show on RFD-TV.
Of course, we don't get it here... _________________ My best,
