I have a shot at one of these for remarkably cheap, but I won't have much of a chance to try it out before committing.
What is the general impression of these guitars, and if it needs parts, how big a headache am I getting into?

I played one for about 16 years and for their day,were very well made guitars.They stay in tune,have smooth pedal action if someone hasn't screwed it up and very good tone.The chrome plated fingers don't groove up like aluminum fingers do.
On the down side,parts are pretty hard to come by but not impossible to find. Changing copedents can be time consuming and mildly irritating if you like to change your tuning now and then and it's a very heavy guitar at somehwere around 80 lbs in the case.
If the price is low and you are wanting a D10 to use as a second pracrtice guitar then it may be just what you need but keep in mind the newer guitars on the market are generally lighter, easier to work on, change tunings,get parts/support etc. |

Ken,I bought a S-10 a few months ago and it is great,I got some extra parts from Tom Bradshaw,like Dick said the Double neck will be a heavy guitar...my single neck weighs 40 LBS,they are built like a tank,very precise tuning etc.As long as someone didn't monkey with the underside too much,and the price is right,and make sure the pickups work..but once again it will be heavy

I would like to add one more recommendation for the Dekley. I have a D-10, and it has been a great guitar. I've had it out on 50 or so gigs, and a short tour, and it has been extremely reliable. I'm working on getting some parts from Tom Bradshaw myself, and it seems that he has just what I need, at a fair price, so I'd say go for it. I'd by another on if the timing was right. The only drawback is the weight, but I'd say it's worth dealing with unless you can afford a brand new steel made out of space-age stuff...

Ken, I can solve the weight issue for you. I build light weight split cases for the older guitars. One for the body with wheels and a spring handle, and one for the pedal rack and the legs. It takes 20 pounds off the total carry weight.
