First time in a long time, I went out to some of the local watering holes to see who and what and where. I saw 3 different country bands, none of which had a Steel Player. Something was missing. All night the bands sounded so empty. No feeling, no soul, just blang, blang, blang, guitars, bass and drums. I say BOOOOOOOOOO... I'm so happy to be one of only a few working steel players in my regional area making country music with some feeling to it. It's hard to listen to ANY band without a steel player anymore.

STEEL,,, Love it, Learn it, Live it....

I agree Jim. If I don't see a steel or fiddle on stage when I go to a club I leave. As far as I'm concerned any band without these essential instruments is, in my opinion, a funtion band singing country songs.

Very Happy I posted on another thread about steel and guitar.Got to thinking more about it but it is sort of funny how things change.Back in the 50s in west Texas i know for sure steel players tried and did make their steels sound a lead guitar. And many guitar players tried and did make their guitars sound like a steel. Those were some good times IMHO as every picker didn't try to sound alike.

Where I live, the typical country band has an acoustic guitar, electric guitar (usually a Tele or something close to it), bass, and drums. Steel isn't necessary because the lead player can fake a few steel 'bends' and it will pass for a 'country' sound.

I took a lot of flack before on another post about this [and that's ok I love it]But it's impossible to play classic country music[not this 70's rock and roll they call country today]without a steel guitar,The steel was the most dominant instrument in the REAL country music. If the steel is not prominent in the mix, call it what you please, but don't call it country. And yes I know there were Hag songs etc, etc, without steel,No matter NO steel,NO country.
