I was just listening to James Hands' "The Truth Will Set You Free" album again. I really love the sound of Lloyd's steel on that record. Do any of you Texans know what equipment he was using (steel/amp) and/or how it was recorded (direct, mike, etc.). For some reason, the sound just stands out to me with each listen. Thanks for your help. Boo |

Boo, I can't answer your specific question, but I've seen a lot of recent photos of Lloyd where he's playing a black SD-10 Mullen. Both live, as well as in the studio.
I've also seen one shot of him on a Zum (...don't know how old that picture is, though). I think he's been mostly a Mullen guy for at least the past 10 years. |

Thanks, Tucker and Charlie. I've seen him play a Mullen as well. I was looking to see if any of the Texas players had any further knowledge of how this was recorded. There is something so "thick" and "resonant" about the sound of his steel on this particular recording -- always looking to learn a trick or two. Thanks again! Boo |

I just listened to "Baby, Baby, Don't Tell Me That" from the album, and the steel sound is actually pretty generic. What gives it that "thick and resonant" quality is the EQ they chose. I can nail that tone on any modern steel (using most amps), as it's very close to the sound I use. The secret is strong lows, very little mids, and just enough treble to keep it from sounding muffled. |

Donny,
You should go visit Buddy Charleton and help him out. One time I was down there and he was wasting all this time showing me how Lloyd's sound is such a great example of perfect picking when all he needed to do was adjust the amp !' ' _________________ Bob |

He was playing the SD-10 Mullen the last time I saw him... of course I didn't get up close to the stage while he was actually "playing" it.

That looks like the black SD-10 I got from Al Desjardin, and then sold to Randy Carson, who swapped it to Lloyd, who then brought it back to me to put his setup on. It's a good sounding guitar if that's the one. But Lloyd may have ordered a new one like it. Lloyd is pretty hard on his guitars, actually. He doesn't baby them. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines and co. are among my favorite live acts. Nothing short of amazing! Also in the second photo are other members of Terri's band: Glenn Fukunaga on bass, and Paul Pearcy on percussion.
Don't miss their show if they play near you.
Keep on pickin'!

Saw them play out here last year. Got to hang with Lloyd for a bit after the show, and we had a short, impromtu dobro jam.
What nice fellow. He has been a favorite of mine for many years, it was and honor and a thrill to meet him.
And I really enjoyed Terri! _________________ Mark |
