Got my new Lap King Rodeo some days ago, here's a pic and a couple of soundfiles I recorded this weekend. There's really not much to say about these wonderful lap steels that hasn't been said before - I haven't been able to shoot a pic of it that does justice to its beauty, and the sound is fat and creamy.
Only problem is that now I have to get a Les Paul to match it..... Laughing

A dreamy sort of tune - Blue Rodeo - "rhythm" steel is tuned GBEGBD (L to H) while the melody is played in straight highbass-G. Used my trusty old POD on this.

Yes I admit it, I'm a big ZZ Top fan - ZZ Rodeo - tuned to highbass-G, using a Jekyll & Hyde overdrive in front of the POD.

And here she is in all her glory:

Cool

Don't forget sacking, looting and burning! Steinar can burn, all right. I believe Mr. Gibbons would approve the flagrant corpulence of your tone, sir. Very Happy

It's an awesome little steel, and living proof that the material and construction has just as much to do with the sound as the pickup, even on a solidbody.
It has the same pickup as my previous "Bel Aire" model, a Duncan PhatCat, but it's a totally different sound - this one is made like a Les Paul with Mahogany body and a flame Maple top, and it really has that Les Paul 'juice'. The Bel Aire I had sounded more like a cross between an SG and a Tele in comparison.

When I test a new guitar I always play it unplugged for a half hour or so to get a good impression of the acoustic properties of the instrument, and if the pickup's any good it should be able to 'translate' that sound when plugged in.

Such a problem to have...

The only criticism I can offer is that those tunes ended TOO DAMN SOON! Crying or Very sad

Thanks for the clips and the photo. I'm excited to say that I should be receiving my Rodeo 8 string within the next two weeks. Mine will have a lollar pickup based on the Gibson console. Is your Rodeo anything like your Asher or are they completely different beasts?

The similarities lies in the superb workmanship and the scale length (25") - if I should compare the tone of the Rodeo with something it would be a good National Dynamic, a very focused and 'tight' tone. The Asher has more of an open tone, as you would expect from a semi acoustic. I would imagine the new "Les Paul" style Ben Harper models sounds more like the Rodeo..

Unbelievably good, Steinar. I'm amazed that one guitar can give you such variety of tone. The ZZ Rodeo piece is sensational -- you really got that singing, vocal quality that I love. Great playing, as always.

Thanks Peter! Perhaps I should mention that I played "Blue Rodeo" with fingerpicks and "ZZ Rodeo" barefingered. Lately I've preferred to play without picks when I do overdriven blues/rock stuff, it seems to result in more variations in tone and bring out more of the "moan".

Hi Steinar
That's a great guitar, it looks just like mine. Funny thing is, mine doesn't sound like that. Is this more of that "it's in the hands" thing?

Jason does build a great guitar, mine has started a whole new career for me.

Thanks Stephen Very Happy !
It MUST be a "in the hands thing" because both my sons, 6 & 11 take guitar lessons but I couldn't get them to hold a lap steel.......
I called them in to hear the "ZZ" clip. First my oldest said in disbelief "he's playing THAT on one of your old fashion guitars!?"
Then followed with "Dad you've GOT to make me one of those! they're so cool, PLEASE! Rolling Eyes

Jason - that may be the closest thing I've heard to a kid calling his dad "cool" -- you're cool by association!
