nothing ever marked as read

I have noticed recently that when I view items they are never marked as read. Does anyone know if this is a setting I have unknowingly changed.

Thanks Butch

This only occurs under two conditions that I know of.

1: You have disallowed session cookies
2: You are using your browser's Back button instead of the forum links to go back to the section indexes.

If you are using the back button you must also hit the Refresh button to see that you have read a topic. The best way to return is to use the forum links at the top or bottom of a topic's page. This function automatically refreshes the icons for you.

Hi Butch:
Did you ever get your problem solved?
I have had the same thing the last few days.
When I run the pointer over the posts they change color but when I click on to read them the color goes away, and it remained colored a few days ago so you could tell at a glance if you had read it.

George.

The problem still exists for me. I followed Wiz's suggestions about cookies and not using the back button - no joy.

It's possible that you guys have a security program on your computers, and it is responsible for blocking the forum's cookies, or is "covering your tracks" under some privacy setting.

If this occurs in your everyday browser try a different one, like Firefox (link in my signature). Have the new browser import all of your cookies and bookmarks/Favorites, visit the SGF, login and see if the icons display properly in the new browser. If so, ditch the old browser for your daily use and go with the new one.

I use IE 7 with XP Media Center. I configured the privacy settings to always allow cookies from SGF. Tried with AVG Free not running. Tried using my bride's PC running Firefox 1.5 and XP Home. No joy with any of these.

Security programs? None that I know about, unless you count AVG Free and whatever my DI-604 router does.

Butch and George (if I may speak for them) and myself have all noticed the same thing - this feature used to work (in my case, even when using the back button, which I always did) and now it doesn't.

This is not the biggest deal in the world - I know pretty much what I have and haven't read - but it's an interesting problem.

It could be easy to over look what Wiz said about login.

I think you have to log in for a "persistent" cookie to be set. b0b could verify/clarify that point.

When you log in, you can check the setting to automatically log in when site is visited.

This may or may not help.

Being logged in or not makes no difference in my case. In fact, even though I have checked the "log me in automatically each visit" box, I still have to log in to post a reply, etc.

Not a big deal - just wondering.

I run Firefox all the time and still no headings ever show as being read.

If you check the box to log you in automatically,
and you still have to login each time,
it is very likely you have a cookies setting issue.

Certainly a good place to start.

1)Check cookie settings in browser

2)Check any security/av/firewall software settings that might block cookies

If you have your browser to accept cookies for the forum's website address specifically,
and that setting is being over ridden,
then it could be your security software.

When it was working...

Lou-

Can you remember of any changes you might have made or any software updates that were installed around the time you started having the problem?

I've noticed that if I read every thread in a forum by using 'next oldest topic' then the forum is marked as read. If I don't read every topic then the forum is not marked as read. And a couple of days ago when I read any topic it was then marked as read, usually the topics are never marked as read. I have not changed any security settings. Curious.

This sounds like it may be a cache issue. Cache is a place where visited pages are stored to be recalled if the original page has not changed since the last visit. Sometimes a browser must be forced to check for a new version of the page you are revisiting, in order for the cache to get updated and show the current state. Clear your browser's cache and reduce it to 1 MB, for broadband, or 10 MB for dial-up connections.

One can force a fresh page load by clicking on the Refresh/Reload button while simultaneously holding down the Shift (Firefox), or Control (IE) key.
