| What would be the standard tunings of a double neck 8 string non-pedal steel. I thought maybe an A6 and an E7, but since I play a pedal guitar and use C6 and E9, I wasn't sure about what tunings are standard, even if there is such a thing. A young fellow who comes into our music store has purchsed a Gibson steel, possibly a 1948. He's never played steel, so I was wondering what tunings would be best for him to start on. Also, what string gauges would be best suited for the two tunings......Thanks, Carson |

C#m7th: (hi to lo) E C# B G# E B G# E
C6th: (hi to lo) E C A G E C A G

Either of two formats..
For Country-Swing etc.
C6 and E13 (Leon McAuliffe)
for Hawaiian
E13 (Isaacs) and B11 (Jules)

I agree that A6 and E7 will be the easiest for a beginner to visualize. They are for me, and I'm a beginner. I struggled with C6 for almost a year and then when I went down to A6, the location of the E made it all come together.
E7 is a natural for a spanish style guitar player. Very easy transition. From there you can go to the more exotic tunings like E13 or E9 or C#mi.
As far as gauges, just buy some strings off this forum, or else get 'em from SIT for those particular tunings if you are a dealer. www.scottysmusic.com is another great source for strings, and is a good reference for part numbers.
