it finally happened or came close to happeneing. a tuner on my beloved 1940 epi lap steel stopped working. I did get to tighten long enough for a recording track and then it died.
lucky me. now I am in the market for epi tuners.
I checked the tuner replacements with the usual suppliers, but none would have the epi logo stamped on it. nor would it have the particular tuner butten.
where do you all look? ebay? craigs list?
or do you have a pile in your basement.
I am open fopr business.

Is the logo stamped on the plate, or the knobs/ buttons?? Question Which part failed, the gear?

the logo is stamped on the back housing. and I believe the gear is failing.
it grips and I can get a wind or two then nothing. then with a few more turns it grips again.
there is only minimal slop in the button rod and the tuning post is solid.

I have some misc parts around here Randy. Is the gear held on with a screw like most tuners? There are a variety of gears. If the gear can be removed with the screw, I coud send you some gears and you could see if any will work for you.

Bill. thank you for the replies. I attempted to photo the tuners, as a pic is better than a thousand words. they came off too blurry. I need to dig out my tripod.
the tuners are sealed. I do not see a way in. maybe prying, as it could be a tension fit?
I bet it is the gear.
after seeing your work on another thread and your reply I thought I went to heaven.
after work today I will recheck the tuner to see if can be opened for a rebuild.
thanks X ten.

Well, if you can't fix it, send it to me and I'll give it a try.
It will only cost you the postage.

thanks Bill. it is holding now and that's all I need until friday.
I will unscrew the tuner again and this time I will look closer.
I am curious if I missed anything.
to be sure. I will send it if I cannot fix it.
thank you.

The covers appear to be riveted to the base plate. Not a problem, but DON"T pry them apart. I can remove the rivets to repair as necessary if you want. If you pry on them and bend the covers, it will be hard to fix.

I have a few types of gears around here, so hopefully I can match the bad ones in your tuners.
