Rick, you gotta add this to your collection!

Hey Rick,
Do they have anything like this in Florida? This is something I would play wearing a lampshade after several malibu bay breezes. It may also double as a bass guitar.

I've seen these in 2nd hand stores over the years. I believe they are Indian or Pakidermy made. Last time I saw one they wanted $40. I passed.

Ron, I haven't seen one like that around here. I'm not so sure it would really be a hot bikini babe magnet anyway - and that's the criteria we have to go by in these parts . .

Ya think an old hottie-has-been like me can still turn a few heads down there?

The script looks like Thai. My wife is from Burma and I've seen them there too...

Not sure what the name is. I've seen them in lots of music stores in Japan. Any of our forumites from Asia care to comment?

In India, they call it a 'banjo' (I'm serious)
In Japan, they call it a 'table harp' or 'Suzuki harp'
I have one of the Suzuki harps, pretty simular to this in style, but a much higher quality
Pretty fun to play, hard to play in tune.....especially if you're jammin' with someone else.

So, we can definitely rule out a lap steel. Can I still play something while I wear my lampshade? Rick never answered me if I am too old for the Florida bikinis.

Not to worry Ron, there are plenty of old bikini babes that hang out on Hollywood Beach. Man, do they hang out . . .
And I'm sure some of them are turned on by lampshades!
[This message was edited by Rick Alexander on 31 March 2005 at 07:49 PM.]

Gentlemen, we call it TAISHO-GOTO or TAISHO-KOTO in Japan. The one from ebay looks a little different though. Jay, as you mentioned Suzuki music is making it, and I guess some other Japanese companies are making it, too.

The wealth of knowledge on this forum ceases to amaze me. I had no idea what that that instrument was and now I've been educated. In my own defense, I DID know it wasn't a steel guitar.

Charlie,
I have an electric-fried version....it's called a Shahhi Baja and it's from India.
I use it in a band I'm in named "Sahara Sands" and we play dancing music for belly dancers!
Pretty cool gig-but it can be distracting at times....
