I've got a laptop next to the steel as a practice aid--BIAB etc. I hate---really hate---using a mouse with picks on & all. This mouse is ready for replacement anyway--corded and getting funky. What else works well, especially with picks? I've never used anything but a mouse so I'm not at all up on the other options out there. FWIW, it's a Win98 rig. |

Jon, I use nothing but Kensington Expert track balls. Got 3 of them. I roll the ball with my palm, left click with my thumb, below where the pick is.no interference.right click with my pinky. They are costly but reliable and the company is great to deal with. They also have scroll rings on the new models.

PJ--thank you. I will have a look at that.
Wiz---this is embarrassing-----I bought this Toshiba Satellite 4000CDS from Bob Lee a couple of years ago and I never did anything but plug it in, boot it up and run with the mouse. There are two longish buttons below the space bar called "AccuPoint buttons" and there is a green rubber pencil eraser sized button amid the G H & B keyboard buttons that is identified as an "AccuPoint pointing device".
I can't figure out how to make these do anything, let alone what they will do if I can figure it out. Don't tell me I've got to break out the manual!? |

That green rubber topped object is your mouse pointer. You can move it in all directions, with a fingertip, to move the pointer on the monitor screen. The two buttons would then represent the left and right mouse buttons. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Holy Guacamole, Batman!
I had no idea. It has always been disabled because I've always had a mouse plugged in. But I just rebooted w/o mickeymouse & by golly. This will take some getting used to but, like, who knew?
In retrospect, I suppose that my dismissal of the green nub as 'ornamental' was a bit less than astute. |

OK--I'm a man of action. I get right on things.
I'm just about to order a trackball thing but I suddenly wondered----does anyone have anything to say one way or another about touchpads?
I could see this being great with picks on---running thru long BIAB lists etc.....
Do they work as well as they should or are there issues I should know about? |

I've tried a trackball and didn't like it and couldn't even make myself like it. Fortunately the place I bought it from took it back after working with it for two weeks.
Touchpads take getting used to but that's pretty much standard on new laptops. |

Funny thing you should ask! I have a customer who has C-B, and can't use a regular mouse without much difficulty. I found a touchpad mouse for him a few years ago and he bought it and loves it. You slide your finger in the direction you want the pointer to go, and it has horizontal and vertical slidebar controls on the right and bottom edges. I forget the who made it, but you should be able to find one at Tiger Direct, or any major computer accessories reseller.
I wasn't cheap, if memory serves me well. It has a serial port connector, but I bet the newer ones would have a USB or PS2 plug. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I'm looking at an Adesso EasyCat 2-Button PS/2 Glidepoint Touchpad at Amazon for $32--I owe them (Amazon) for covering my back on a botched 3rd party transaction (stay away from Antonline) so that's where I'm going to buy this. Although the trackball was recommended in this thread, I could see how one might or might not get accustomed to it.
And btw, this is, once again, for my W98 notebook so USB (1.0) is likely to be irrelevant.
Looks like I'll go for it. |
