You,re not going to believe this but i have a friend that has a Sho-Bud maverick with 5 knee levers, 1 is vertical, and 3 floor pedals and is in the process of adding a 4th floor pedal. He machined most of the parts used to do this and i saw on the forum a few days ago that a fellow was asking if it were possible to add a second knee lever. This thing is really a work of art. I wouldn't believe it if i had not seen it.........never say never ha.

Basically the conditions are that when you have a machine shop at your disposal, and you know how to run the stuff, you can make stuff that would be too costly to pay someone else to make...
I can make parts for my axes, but the cost and liability for doing it for someone else may make buying a different steel the less expensive choice for them to make.
YMMV

I got my CNC mill set up and running correctly on my laptop. Now if I ever find time to use it, I'll be making some parts.

I have a Maverick that I put 4 more KL's on in 1978. It has been stripped of its plastic covering and a George L's 12-string p/u has been fit into it. I opted for the 12-string p/u because I just had one, plus it has a different impedance that the 10-string. The guitar has my 'short Uni' tuning (B on 9th, G# on 10th). The pedals are standard (Emmons setup). I use the LKV to pull 4 to F# by itself. It can be done with some work. It's not an easy guitar to tune as half of the stuff has to be set from underneath, but it was the only steel I had at the time, so I went for it. It remains a dependable little job-ready guitar and I do occasionally play a gig with it for kicks. It's raise-predominant, so there are things I can do with it that I can't do with my others.

You guys are tickling me!!!!!!!!!

I am 65 have a country machine shop,and 40yrs machinist exp.

I first learned on brown and sharp screw machines, and have owned a number 1 and a number 2 for several years myself.

each of you are right, i can build anything i want for myself.
but its just to expensive to set up and build for someone else.

i also own 2 old bridgeport vert. mills. but there is lots more
to it than just having the machinery!!!!!!!!!!!

6yrs ago i spent 5000.00 dollars on wood working machinery.
i bought a delta 18" planer. shaper 10 uni. saw ect.

the machinery is cheap, try buying the cutters and tooling.

I build my own cams ect for the automatic screw machs,

after all those yrs. I'VE just lost interest!!! LOTS of hours, and hard work toooooo.

its ok to set up for a few thousand pcs. but not a few.
Form tools are expensive and time consuming!!!

I'll stop, best to buy your steel and play!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My buddy Ray Morrison (who built my guitar) used to do a lot of this sort of thing in his shop. As was said in an earlier post, all that's needed is the right tools and know-how. (I'd say especially a milling machine..) I'll bet 75% of the work he did was pedal and lever modifications to customer's guitars. (The other 25% would be restorations, overhauls and building new guitars...)

FWIW,

Dennis

I have an old maverick I got for $200 ten years ago. A few months after I got it, and outgrew the non-adjustable aircraft cable 3 and 1 setup, I sent it to a guy in Indiana, Ed Naylor maybe ??? , and he ripped out the entire undercarriage and put in a pull rod system making it a 3 and 4. Very inexpensive and its really not a bad guitar now. I hate the tuning machine assembly though - way too stiff, and its a complete pain changing strings the way they attach to the changer.

Where there's a will theres a way.
