After a few years of steel playing back in the 70's and early 80's, I packed it in due to family concerns/lack of work/other interests.
Excuses, excuses, I know. Some times you take a turn in life that wasn't for the best. The decision I made was, I feel the right one for me at the time.
Regrettably, I sold my 1976 MSA D10 Classic to raise money for a piano for my daughter. Great axe for its time, but 89 lbs heavy in the case. I cringe when I see what they are going for today. So that one's water under the bridge too.
But as all steel lovers know, steel just never gets out of your blood. It stays in your system till they bury you, and even then I am not sure. Maybe you get a steel to play instead of a harp up there in the blue yonder.
So, as fate will have it, my love for the steel has come out of hibernation. This as a result of me getting on the web 3 months ago and searching for fellow steel players from my native Norway. (I immigrated to Canada in 1973).
I was received with open arms by these fine musicians. They have their own steel forum at www.steelgitarklubb.com
They all are dead serious about their instrument and love talking steel.
Also, I paid a visit to our very own steel builder here in Ontario a couple of weeks ago...Ed Fulawka. Ed, the gracious, kind-hearted man he is, took me in for 3 days. He even let me play his own steel. Man, what a feeling to play the steel again after no picking for 20 years! I darn near cried when I discovered that some of the knowledge was still there and in fact I was able to work my way through songs like Last Date and Cold Cold Heart. The speed and finesse was certainly not there...but at least I remembered fret and pedal positions!
Now, with itchy fingers once more, the desire to own a steel is there again. But it's easier said than done, now that I am a retiree. We'll see how it goes.
I am happy to have found this forum. You all seem like a big happy family. I will be looking forward to posting with everybody.
By the way, whatever little I learned, I have the late Jeff Newman to thank for. His Steel college and seminars were the best!
All the best,
Bent |

Welcome back into the fold.
Old MSA's come and go, but I'll bet you've got your mouth set on a Fulakwa.
But my MSA sounds as good as it did 30 years ago (I imagine).
Get yerself a steel, haul off and pick it. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

Thanks for the warm replies so far! Y'all know how to warm the heart of a fellow steeler! Your nice words were all very encouraging. Thanks to b0b for signing me up right away. I am looking forward to getting those magazines, b0b.
I think I will reply to the last 2 posts. Yes, Charlie, for the time being, I have my teeth firmly planted in a Fulawka. But wishful thinking and reality don't always mix. And reality is that that it could be a 2 year wait for one of those. I know ole Ed is working on a couple of orders as we speak.
Get a cheapo in the meantime you say? sure might be an idea..I'll just have to weigh priorities.
Farris: Your suggestion re selling the 4 wheeler is not crazy at all. I don't have one, but I do have a 96 pickup...anybody up for a trade? hehe. Sadly, I could only get maybe 80 $ for the lawnmower.
Thanks again everybody!
