Just a heads up for those of you on the west coast and other time zones. The Carson Daly show aired a group called Ben Harper [I think that is right] and Innocent Criminals with veteran bluesman Charlie Musselwhite tonite. Lots of shots of the lap steel but I could not determine the make. The tune was an uptempo jam that never changed from the 1 as far as I could tell.
This was my first time hearing this band. Anyone tell me more about them?

Hi Jerry:

Ben Harper is quite well known among the rock circles, and has many albums to his name, including one with the Blind Boys of Alabama that won a Grammy a year or two ago. Ben plays lap steel and standard and is a strong songwriter and vocalist. Ben plays lots of different instruments so I'm not sure what he was using on the show. He designed a lapsteel with Bill Asher some years ago called the "Ben Harper model" that is a true work of art. The lapsteel has a chambered body and two pickups.

Interesting factoid: He is (was?) also married to actress Laura Dern (daughter of actor Bruce Dern).

He also, but rarely in public, plays standard 'slide' guitar.
Taught to him by my friend, Peter Volpe.
