Last Friday night I had a real treat at NY's Rodeo Bar......The Jack Grace Band.......with two guys both on lap and standard guitar......

Mike Neer & Drew Glacken......

The music is country, alt country, rockabilly, psycho grass, western swing.....

Jack Grace with a big voice on guitar, his wife Daria on vocals & bass.....Mike on lap steel & guitar, Drew on the same.....

what a contrast of style between these two.....they played steel at the same time, guitar at the same time, and switched on both to add a great versitilty to the music...

Drew's steel style is with more effects and has his tuning set up where he uses a lot of string pulls to emulate pedal steel....his playing is more of a long note, long sustain pedal steel style with some distortion....on guitar, finger style chicken kinda pickin'....he is unique

Mike's steel was more of a hot style with a cleaner sound and slight Hawaiian feel, and when they both played steel, it meshed pretty well. Mike is a monster on guitar and did some fine rockabilly twanging on it.

What a powerful performance.....I was lovin' it......

Thanks, Howard. It's always good to see you, and you are one great supporters of live music in NY.

I had a blast and I really like Jack, Daria and Drew. I also thought the drummer, Russ, was terrific. Drew and I definitely hit it off on several levels.

I've been wanting to break out and play more electric steel and guitar, and this was a great opportunity for me.
I started the gig with a completely new tuning that I hadn't used before. After 2 or 3 songs, I changed the tuning to another that I'd never used before, but ultimately discovered that I love it and have been diligently working with it.

Incidentally, I'll be back at the Rodeo Bar with the Jack Grace Band on March 15 (and with the Moonlighters on March 5).

Mike
