Hi Paul.. Hope you see this and can take a minute to comment..Lately I have been watching again and enjoying some of your truly remarkable live work with Dire Straits.. I hope my comments and conclusions are not out of line with reality at the time..
As I watch, I do not see you at all as I "hired gun".. You seem to be a member the band, and they seem to enjoy your presence and playing greatly... For some reason, I do not get the same feeling when I watch some modern country guys, and the steel guys that play for them.. Often its more like an employer/employee type thing..or at least thats my impression..
You were always up in the mix, sound was exquisite, absolutely pristine tone in every note. and you had seemed to have latitude to stretch out and do YOUR thing the you thought it should be.. but again, thats just my perspective..
It seemed as if your steel work was given a place of honor in what may be the best rock band of the 80's 90's era.. Quite an accomplishment!!
I suppose the reason for this post is this.. Outside of RR, steel players just don't get the kind of gig you experienced with Dire Strats.. These days, I see so many great players "held in check" by performers and not allowed to shine... I love seeing the old videos of those shows with DS.. I wonder if you can take a moment and share a bit of your recollections of those days in your career.. Very few of us steel players, including some of the world's best, will ever experience playing for 60'000 people at one time!!!
You made a great band even better, and I could see the rock fans loved your playing as much as us steel players do.
I sincerely appreciate and enjoy your great playing as much now as i did then.. bob |
