Hello all,
I'm a newer member although I've been reading here for awhile...Finally got around to getting a pic on the computer of one of the lap steels I've built...This is a 10 string ash body (quarter-sewn swamp), painted fretboard, aluminum bridge and nut, and a nasty bill l pickup. I use a volume pedal so I just installed the jack on the bottom (i think it's much better there then the side or top).
I play a lot of 6 string lap stuff, so I wanted a larger lap that would match the tone of my magnatone..Too bad for me the magnatone now sounds whimpy compared to response I get out of this bill l pickup(610)
Anyway after playing this at a few gigs up here in canada I ended up getting a few orders from local players and the next thing you know I'm building a whole bunch...
I'd appreciate any feeback on the design...
Obviously, it's somewhat fender inspired at least in it's simplicity...

Nice work Curtis!
Design wise I perfer the body to taper
wider starting from maybe fret twelve.
An inch wider maybe on each side and that extra width colored black.
Might I ask your string span at the nut and
also at the pickup?
Roy

Thanks Guys,
I understand what you mean about the body, but when I built it I designed it for comfort, and several guitar like laps I have played actually move the bridge(and your hand position away from your body). This design works great for me cause you can have it nice and close to your hip, much like you would when picking normal guitar.(and if you have a big gut it helps too...lol)
The cut is 4 & 3/4s by 1 & 7/8ths. Also affordability was in mind with this, as So many manufacturers seem to be in the 500 to 1000 range, I can do this in the 250-500 dollar range(6,8,10, 500 being a 10 with legs),with pro tuners and quality pickups...
String spacing is pedal steel, with a 3 & 1/8" spacing at the nut.
I Use 3/8 on my 8s so the overall feel is the close to this guitar and my varsity, and thats 2 & 3/4" overall.I haven't had any problem going back and forth...
I guess what I'm most concerned about is whether or not people will accept the lack of controls. It does force you to use a pedal, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing if your not used to them.I know for myself it's about the only way I would have used a pedal after pinkying the volume on a strat for 20 years.

Curtis. I really like your design. What is the string spacing on this guitar? |
