A student of mine who has an interest in metallurgy asked me an interesting question; why are resophonic cones made out of aluminum (a poor conductor of sound) rather than a metal which is known for good sound conductivity such as brass? Are there cones made out of brass? Presumably it would be heavier and more expensive to make, but what would it sound like?

The 'best sounding' material isn't necessarily the best thing to make the cones out of. Look at the driver material in high end speakers, Aluminum, Kevlar, Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber. None of these materials have much of a tap tone yet they are stiff and light. According to legend, the Dopyera's tried many different metals, and even different alloys of Aluminum before settling on 99% pure stuff. Aluminum is a great combination of lightness and strength, Brass is much heavier and the string energy needed to 'drive' it would be much greater, so it likely would result in a much quieter guitar. Aluminum is also very 'spinnable', unlike other metals such as Titanium, which might be a great cone candidate, if it could be formed.

Combine a comb with that wax paper like any serious kazoo builder would, put three in one guitar and you've got a tricomb.
