Wow. Guys, I was plundering through an old stack of .45's I grabbed over at Mom and Dad's house... one is an Agape Record, "Chicken Gumbo" (written by Jim Colvard and Hal) by "The Family Jewels" featuring Hal Rugg and Buddy Spicher... I had almost forgotten how incredible my ol' buddy was. I wish there was some way I could share this with you... the flip side ("A Side") is "Sweet Sauce" (Boudleaux Bryant) with Buddy doing most of the lead work...
I'm so glad I bought that turntable last week...! _________________ Mikey D... H.S.P.
Music hath the charm to soothe a savage beast, but I'd try a 10mm first.

Hi Michael,
Somewhere out there is a whole album of this material by Hal & Buddy Spicher. Last I heard it was owned by the Pete Drake estate. Tom Bradshaw might know more about this. Are you friends with Buddy, he might know also? The single is very cool.

Hi Michael,
Hal and Jimmy Colvard were friends. They met in Minneapolis while Hal lived there for a couple of years, in the early 60s.
(around 1962--1963) I believe Hal moved to Nashville in 1963 and Jimmy moved to Nashville a bit later. They may have been in the same band at the famous "FLAME CAFE", at about 1600 Nicolett Ave. in Minneapolis.
Jimmy played guitar on Dave Dudley's "Six Days On The Road", which I believe was recorded in Minneapolis. |

Hey Mike,
I have that 45 rpm also. Found it many years ago, what a great tune. I've also seen the whole Family Jewels Album offered on eBay from time to time, which I picked up a while ago. |

Hey Fred,
Can you see if you have that album? Because I was unaware that it was ever released.
Thanks,
Joe |

Joe,
I never had the actual LP, but bought a CD of it on eBay. The quality is not great but the playing is. I forget his name but his eBay name is sauce4050, and seems to have all permissions. He is offering other things of Hal's also. There are two concerts listed right now. You could get a hold of him about the Family Jewels album I would bet. There were 12 cuts, and the last 2 were Chicken Gumbo and Sweet Sauce from the 45 rpm. I would post an mp3 but I don't know if that would be cool or not.
Hope this helps

Clem Schmitz lives in Nashville now and he should know something about it. He is the ebay guy refered to and the worlds biggest Hal fan. _________________ Bob |
