I'm about to build an 8 string non pedal guitar. Can anybody recommend a suitable pick-up? Or have you up-graded existing pick-ups? I'm after a fat warm sound. |

You have to go to www.lollarguitars.com
He's always been very helpful to me when I've had questions. Unfortunately, he doesn't make the Ricky horseshoe p'ups any more, since those #*&@ at Rickenbacker filed a suit to force him to stop. I think those were the ones in conjunction with Rick Aiello, if I'm not mistaken. Sigh... He does do Stringmaster and Gibson style, though.
Good luck! _________________ Todd James Weger --

Rick Aiello, SGF member, and recognized pickup guru especially when it comes to vintage warm 'fat tone' would have the answer to your question. He has always responded to my emails and has a wealth of information regarding your request. It would be well worth your time to email him. |

Pete Biltoft (vintagevibeguitars.com) makes Stringmaster-type and humbucking pickups. He also makes single-blade, Charlie Christian style pickups -- I have a Strat-size one in my Melobar steel. It's amazing. He will make a pickup to get the sound you want. |

Jason Lollar can fix you up with about anything you want.
How about a pair of Stringmaster pickups?, Or maybe just one.
In my own expreience, I wouldn't go into the horseshoe idea.
Most of the mojo of horseshoe pickups is in the body of the guitar, like cast aluminum or bakelite. On a wood guitar, there are lots of pickups that will work fine.
I build mostly 7 string guitars, and I use DiMarzio 7 string humbuckers (DP702 Bridge humbuckers) and I think they sound good, and I pay 69 bucks plus shipping.
It's up to the "ear of the beholder" so-to-speak.

I've bought a few sets of pickups off Pete. One of my steels has the Charlie Christian repro in it (he calls it a CC Rider). I like the tone. Mine cost $75 shipped to my door.
He says he builds p'ups on request. Go check out his stuff here.

Hey, I'm also about to build an 8-string (have been 'about to' for quite a while now, but I just didn't find the time, I hope I'll be able to start by the end of this month).
I already have an 8-string pickup here, a Lollar Chicago Steel, that is supposed to sound similar to the old Valco/National/Supro string-thru pickup, I already tested it by provisionally mounting it on my six-string, and it sounds great, very fat, but with plenty of bite, slightly 'dirty', it is indeed a bit similar in character to my 1952 Supro Supreme.
I also ordered a Stringmaster-type pickup, which Pete from www.vintagevibeguitars.com just put in the mail - I'm going to mount this one in the neck position, and I'm going to add a Fender 4-way switch to choose either pickup, or both in series or in parallel.

Can't put this thread to bed without mentioning Jerry Wallace's 8-string Truetone pickup. Full, warm, clear, well-balanced, & quiet for a single-coil. Very versatile and, not least, probably a whole lot cheaper than it should be! |

that IS true Richard, BUT when one lives in a wilderness the sacrifice is necessary.
Over here "Steal Guitars" is what they do, not an Instrument description. |
