I recently replaced the three in line tuners (X2) on my blonde National from the 40's has the Roman numeral fret markers painted/screened, hardwired cord into body, not sure of the model. They were an exact fit and I didn't have to alter the mounting screw holes on the headstock but the eyelets had to be removed in order for the tuner shaft to fit thru. Is there a way around this short of redrilling the (6) headstocks holes or having the round portion where the string winds onto of the tuners machined down?

The tuner posts seem to come in different diameters. Most of the stuff available, except the hgh-end/expensive tuners are from the Pacific rim, Korea, Tiawan etc, and tuner posts vary in diameter.
Some tuners come with the bushings, but the headstock has to be reamed out for them to fit. If you were to do that, you may as well replace the whole set of tuners so that they all are alike. Reaming the original bushings, or eyelets as you called them is difficult.
I wouldn't advise turning the posts, the plating will be turned off and they will rust before long If the new tuners didn't come with bushings, I have a bunch of them here I could send you. I would have to know the post diameter

Thanks Bill! I bought the replacements from StewMac and as I stated they were exact fit mounting to head stock but I could not put the old eyelets back in the hole as they were too thick in diameter. I have just the tuners on, no eyelets and have not drilled or altered the original holes which I hate to do. I'm not sure I could find a replacement tuner set that would meet the exact standard as the old wurm gear ones I took off due to crumbling buttons and one gear fell apart.

those bushing diameters do vary.
you must have them in place . see if you can find suitable replacements.
or. I would dread that too, make the holes larger.

I think it's a good idea to post all the fixes we come up with on this forum. Tuners seem to be an increasing problem, with all these instruments getting old and having newfound interest from people desiring to play them.

I suppose the old bushings were thin-wall stampings, and the current ones appear to be diecast with thicker cross section.

The problem is that both new style of 3 inline tuning pegs are much bigger in diameter. I bought both styles that StewMac had knowing I'd run into this Sad but figured one would work. The origionals are much more slender but hey! I didn't have to redrill any holes as they line up perfect.......guess I'm asking a little much. I spent 10-12 bucks each set on the replacements vs 40-50 I was looking at so I may have to used them w/o the eyelets until I find a different set. Rolling Eyes

Yeah Randy, I have a bunch of those bushings from tuner sets that I didn't use.
I'll have to check the ID and OD on them and see just what I have. Maybe someone can use them.
Did that tuner work for you Randy??

Hopefully it will work for you OK. It will turn hard, but should not have a slip problem.

Kevin, you could send me the old tuners, and I may be able to repair them. What color are the knobs?? StewMac has knobs which I could put on for you if I can fix the worm drive. The StewMac p/n 0113 white knobs are easy enough to put on. The black ones are hard as hell and difficult to put on, and so are the ivoroid type.
These are the classic oval knobs...page 50
