I went and saw Fred Newell play the other night and while talking to him, I noticed his "D10" wasn't a D10 at all. He had a dobro tuning on his front neck (with pedals), and (I think) E9 on the rear. He used a MatchBro for the dobro tone. For modern country, this solves some of the problems of lugging two instruments and miking the dobro (a frickin' nightmare in my experience).

His was a GFI and sounded very crisp. Does GFI offer this option from the factory or is it an extra charge/wait time?

Doug Livingston had a GFI in Mesa that had an 8 string neck with frets in addition to his 12 string?that you can play like a guitar?I didn't get to play it but wished that I did,I've been working on Richie Havens tuning for a while and that guitar would be perfect for that.

Ralph Mooney used to have the front neck of his Sho-Bud tuned to an open G, with no pedals I think. Then there are these approaches:

Meanwhile, I have found that a stock Marrs Cat Can is a perfect drop-in replacement for the rear neck in a Sho-Bud Crossover frame, and I am working on a couple of those....

I've heard about some of the Cajun guys in Louisiana having an E9 on one neck and an 8-string extended dobro G w/2 pedals on the other neck. I can only guess that one pedal pulls the 3rds and the other one pulls the 5ths.
