Dave Phillips said I should post the pictures of my new guitar here so more folks would see it.

For those who are interested, it was built by Mark Giles of Star Guitars.
He sent the cabinet to me unfinished. I Inlaid the Fret Board then took the cabinet to our workshop in Viet Nam where our artists inlaid the cabinet.

I then returned the cabinet and neck back to Mark and he finished the project.

I guess this will be called my "Dragon Guitar"

The Guitar is Curly California Black Walnut.

When I ordered the guitar I had it set up with two E9th pedals, one for A6th across the lowest 7 strings, and one with a B6th change (B to C# & G# to Bb)...

I fooled around with that for three day but changed it.
I really wanted to learn some Mooney stuff but it is not easy with the E to F# on a knee lever the way I have always had it.

I now changed the guitar to a very standard E9th (Emmons Setup) with the extra pedal pulling the F# to G#.
Knees as follows;
LKL = E's to F
LKV = B's to Bb
LKR = 2nd String, Eb to D/C# & 9th String D to C#
RKL = E's to Eb
RKR = F#'s to G
Very standard tuning and I am having a lot of fun with it.
I decided that many fellows, much smarter than I, and far more talented than I have developed this and used it, so it must be good.

It plays very easy with light & quick pedal and knee lever action.
Tone is great, somewhere between the sound of an older Sho-Bud and Emmons or Zum kind of tone.
A lot to work with.
Got a Peavy Nashville 1-12 and they go real nice together.
I just hope I can get enough chops to justify this guitar.

Hey, Andy: Congratulations on bringing us the most beautiful pedal steel, thus far, into 2007.. Wow... I knew that black walnut was a lovely wood, but your guitar is the greatest piece of walnut, that I've ever seen. Has the Star Co. been building steels for very long? Enjoy your new BABY.. Bernie.. Reply with quote

The guitar neck was made from a 3/4" slab of California Black Walnut.
The cabinet is maple with an 1/8" cover of California Black Walnut. Also known as Claro Walnut.
Even if it were solid walnut I'd have nothing to compare it to so I am sorry I can't really answer the question.

I can tell you that since the early 70's I've built quite a few acoustic guitars with Claro Walnut back and sides and sometimes the necks too.
They have all had very good tone.
I also know that a lot of luthiers who build electric guitars use this wood.

Mark Giles and his partner have been making these for some time, but I am not sure exactly how long. Better if you ask him.

He also makes the cabinets for several other steel guitar companies, but I am not sure which all of these are or if I should even say which.

Without question, they know the right way to build a steel.

Post  Posted 21 Jan 2007 12:06 pm     PSG Fret Boards
Reply with quote

Thank's Hook,
I've for a long time thought that PSG's have often tacky looking Fret Boards even when the rest of the PSG is nice with fine maple or something else.
Other stringed instruments often have nice inlays there while PSG will just have cast plastic or silk screened with odd images.
I am working on some new designs for Front aprons and fret boards.
Also making some PSG versions of classic inlay designs, like the Florentine or Wreath Banjo design.
I am thinking of producing replacement Fret Boards that can just be stuck down.
I will attach two "Virtual" inlays that I am having made now which are a combination of Florentine & Wreath for PSG.

I'd love to get some feed back about what steelers think of these before I get too far into the project financialy?

These are a couple of PSG "Virtual" Front Aprons that I was playing around with.
They are not to the proper scale or proportions yet.
I want to also design matching Fret Board inlays to go with these.
We are already producing these FB inlay sets (Picture attached) for regular guitar, but the scale, width and number of frets on a PSG are not the same.

PSG Aprons;

Guitar Fret Baords;

Really would like feedback, good or bad???

they are beautiful in my way of thinking, i might have one if i can ever get enough money to buy a knew one , as all the knew guitars are getting higher in prices as most of u already know, then with the extra for this type of beautification is tough for a wkend picker , with not many places to play in ms. just my thoughts tommy young

Thank's for the feed back.
For Stu,
The Geckos are a design belonging to one of my inlay customers. Part of his mandolin peg head logos.
He allowed me to use it on my steel but will not allow any other use.
Many folks have asked for that too.

Steven,
Which did you like, The Florentine Wreath or the Nouveau Style?
I am planning to produce these all soon.
Still not sure of the material they will be made in.
Now it is a toss up between Resin casting, Graphite or being inlaid into Ebony wood.
When we start to have them ready we will make them available.
Not even sure if it is OK to discuss sales on this forum. I should check with Bob to be sure I am not getting out of line?

Tommy,
Cost is always a factor. I am still not sure until we decide on the final material and the expense of the process.
I may offer the Florentine Wreath design as a pre-cut inlay on my web site for those who are able to do the inlay work.

Hey Andy, I like both, but the one posted below the other is the one I like, those have to be hard to do, cutting Abalone inlay is very difficult and expensive to do, but I would like to go for two of them, let me know what they cost, steveb318@aol.com.

I expect they will fall between $100 & $200 but don't want to get pinned down yet until we decide on a final process.
Then we will know what they cost us. As of now I would just be guessing blind.
When ready I will make some posts here in the forum.

Thanks for all your feed back.

The fret boards are fantastic. I would be interested when they are available, or sooner. The instruments on your web page and the pictures of your family and Vietnam are beautiful as well.
