There's cool invention out there called a tone gard, made by a guy in CA named Tony Pires, that keeps the back of mandolins and guitars from contacting the belly of its player. I can't speak to its value on guitars, but it makes a significant difference in tone/volume/bass response on mandolins, and many prominent pickers use them. They're basically a metal cage with padded feet that rest along the rim of the instrument, and keep about 1/4" of airspace around most of the back, thus allowing the back to resonate more freely.
Don't know if any weissenborn players out there have ever tried one, but I'm about to have one made for mine. Anyone have any experiences with something like this?

I have always wished for one of those and once tried to put one together myself...with poor success. Please keep us all posted about yours. It should make a significant difference in the sound for sure.

| Thanks for posting this - I can't help you with your question, but now I'm going to see if I can get one made for my ancient Gibson archtop with a very "lively" back, as well as a uke with the same. |

| I've got an old lap steel stand that fits a Weiss and it makes a BIG difference in the sound, I think. Let it breathe. |

I had one of the early ones for my mandolin years ago. It worked great but had issues with the pads falling off and scratching the back. I know they have fixed this by now. It really does work well.
I never did get a tone guard for my new mandolin just because I don't play out anymore and my wife would beat me over the head with it if I played this one any louder...
The only issue you need to think about is the case. It makes the guitar fit very tight. Mine would close but I always worried about the pressure on the top. |
