I finally decided to place my order for a brand new Carter D-10 with 9+7 and a custom color scheme. The fine folks at Carter quoted a 120 day shipping guarantee. I placed my order yesterday, Jan. 8, so it will be on or before May 8 before I take delivery. I do not expect anymore than what they quoted, but I am curious about other experiences. In an era of "instant gratification," I must say that I am more than anxious. How long did it take you all to get your new Carter? Maybe some of your input will help allay my impatience. Thanks in advance. |

One thing (of many) that John & Ann have down is the communication thing. They will not give you a jive date only to let you down. They know what they are doing, they know the kinds of things that can really foul up relations with the customer so they will not set over-optimistic target dates. If I recall correctly, my custom finished (lacquer) SD-12 was right on time (possibly a little early) in 1998. I have read numerous accounts of guitars being delivered ahead of schedule. For sure, you would be informed if there was a snag.
I can't speak for them, of course, but I can't imagine a situation that I would be more at ease with than a business deal with the Carter folks.
That won't help you one bit regarding your wanting it NOW. But as to any concerns about your 120 days turning into 5 months, 6 months....nah, won't happen. Consider the time estimate to be a conservative one. |

When I bought my D-10 from Carter a few years ago it arrived about 30 days earlier than quoted, I was quite happy about that. Great service from a Great company. |

Cameron they are probably busy that is what they told me in '06, I order my D10 and I think they said 90 days (don't quote me though) and it did come early, but I wasn't in a huge rush, I love it it plays so smooth and you will have yours as well, it just takes a little while longer, just be glad its not 2-3 years!! I would have to say waiting is hard but you'r money is safe when I heard of horror stories from other builders! What color did you get? I mailed them a sheet of laminate that I love, its a blue marble swirl.Feel free to email me |

A.J. asked about the color ... this is the color scheme that I ordered as depicted on Carter's website.
The only difference is that the top of mine will be the "ebony birdseye" color. I also had the back apron done in the same scheme as the front.
I just hope that everyone can hear my guitar over the colors |

Cameron, mine took about 3 and a half weeks from the time I ordered it till it was ready to ship ..and Ann rang me in NZ to check on a couple of things to make sure they had everything dead right... mine was also a custom setup, polished knees etc, and custom mica !
You will be a happy camper mate. |

I have just ordered mine also January the 5th !
I am having a custom laminate similair to Paul Franklins.
It's a polished chrome front, with black mica lines top and button of chrome.
I dont think Carter has done one like this before ???
Can't wait I was told 120 - 150 days, but it's worth the wait, after reading all the Testimonials on the Carter site.

I ordered a D-10 on Dec. 3 and although they used to have a shorter delivery time Ann told me they are incredibly busy (good for them) and my ship date would be Feb. 19th or before. I'm getting the standard setup with the Planked Maple top and Swirly Figured Mahogany aprons just like on the website. I can't wait and will be selling my Carter Starter to help offset the cost. This kind of anticipation is the best way to get through the winter months!!! |

Hey Jamie ... I am also a huge Paul Franklin fan. It actually crossed my mind to get mine built with that same color scheme you described. I also like Paul's orange/yellow design. Wouldn't that have been ironic if we both ordered at the same time. Good thing that didn't happen or my guitar may have been sitting in England.
Come to think of it, I don't think Paul even owns an all black guitar ... I wonder how he gets such a good sound out of a non-black guitar?
Dang, I just realized that John and Jaime ordered their guitars before me! Maybe we should start a support group for players waiting for their guitars to be delivered. HAHAHA |

When I ordered my S12U, I was told 90 days (was before the Convention), but it delivered well before that.
I was pleasantly surprised, needless to say. |

I've ordered a few Carters from John , Ann , and Bud. They were delivered on or before the date they were promised. In addition, they arrived ready to play right out of the box. As I've said before they are the best tuning guitars I.ve ever owned.

Thanks for posting, Bruce. I have enjoyed reading your comments in the archives about Carters. I am like you in the sense that I am amazed that these guitars do not require return compensators. This fact was one of the major reasons that I chose Carter. Hysteresis has plagued me on all the guitars I have played. I took care of it with return compensators. It is nice to not have to go to the expense of putting them on a guitar. Thanks again to all who have posted. Keep it coming. |

My experience with Carter's has been exactly the same as Mr. Bouton's. I've ordered guitars from them more than once and each time the arrival was earlier than expected.

When I ordered mine, I think they said 90 days. I'm pretty sure that I got it in 45 to 60 days. I was impressed. Still am impressed with the guitar. The quality, accuracy, and tone of the Carter has helped my playing considerably. I play with more confidence now. Now if I can just get some talent! |

Hello Cameron,
First off,I doubt that you remember me but way back around 1998 I was dating your sister and she brought me out to meet you at a club in a Holiday Inn one night so it's been a while.
I've owned four Carters and delivery was always slightly better than quoted so you can count on what John says.
Lastly,to everyone that has never heard Cameron play all I can say is if you get the chance you will not be disappointed. I think he was about 22 when I heard him and I was extremely impressed by his ability. I'm glad to see you're still playing.
Good luck and enjoy the new guitar! |

Hey Dick,
It's good to hear from you. I do remember you well. I remember how cool it was that my sister was dating a steel player! I mean, what are the odds? Thanks for your reply, and thanks for the generous compliments. Take care.

same thing with their service. It was a few years ago I broke a pull rod on my guitar. All I did was send them an e-mail describing the problem. Next morning the pull rod was in the mail and a response e-mail back was on my computer. No problem they did not even charge me for the part...I drive for fed ex so I am a highly trained customer service specialist (lol) so I know what quality service is...I hope all the other steel builders treat their customers as well as Carter does. I am sure most of them do. |
