Is anybody else having trouble getting to and signing onto the new Fender Forum?

Next, Anybody know about the two kinds of pickups I've seen on these older Fenders.
Some are rectangle shaped with kind of square corners. Look to be about 1.25" wide....
Orher guitars have narrow pickups, maybe 3/4" wide and round at the ends.
Is one kind better than the other?

Thanks for any help with both these questions.

I really don't know much about the pickups, but I believe the larger rectangular ones are the earlier ones and the narrower ones are the later ones. These later narrower ones carried over to the newer 800 and 2000 model guitars. That's about all I know.

The new forum is working fine...are you having trouble finding it or logging in?

As far as the pickups, originally the long-scale (up to 1963) models had the flat "Jazzmaster-style" pickups; the short-scale models went to the rounded "Jaguar-style" pickups. There are some exceptions right around late '62/early '63 with older pickups on newer short-scale instruments.

As far as pickup sound, both are very "Fender guitar" sounding pickups. The Jag-type is a little less prone to hum due to the sawtooth sheilding around it, and is a little warmer; the older one is a tad brighter and has more bite. Most Fender players like both, but the earlier models are usually preferred (possibly more for the long-scale than the pickup). In my case, though, I like the fatter sound of the later ones.

And modding either type with the addition of a second pickup gives you a whole new range of tones - it seems to be a pretty common thing.

You might try reposting the question on the Fender sub-forum; probably get more response there.
