I am looking for an 8-string lap or console steel right now, and I love the sound of the Gibsons I've heard. Any ideas how I could find an EH-150 8-string? I understand they're quite rare.

Gibson didn't list any 8 string EH-150's in their catalog. The console grand came equipped with one seven and one eight string necks as standard. This doesn't rule out any custom made instruments, a thirteen string EH-150 has been documented in a couple of books (apparently one six and one seven string arrangement on a single neck/body. Double neck EH-150's have been seen also. Seven string Gibsons are almost common by comparison. |

Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars says that the first EH-150s were "6 or 7 strings (later 8, 9, or 10 strings optional, at least 1 with 13 strings)" The book also mentions the doubleneck model.
I've taken the liberty of borrowing these from previous threads:
I don't believe I've ever seen a picture of an 8- or 9- string EH-150 ... and I'd love to see the 13-string. |

With the last name Tweedale I would think you were a Fender man...
If you are interested in a nice Grand Console you may want to chek out Kit Simons web site: http://www.picknparlor.com
I didn't see it listed on the site but the last time I was there he had a very nice Gibson with eight on the bottom and seven on top.
Good guy too.

Thanks for the info Russ and Ron! It sounds like a console D-8 might be a better bet. Gary, that link to the old time guitar parlor worked, but I couldn't find the Gibson Console Grande (btw, yes, I do play through a tweed blues jr.)

That's my 10 string (on my kitchen floor!) above, by the way.
Lovely instrument! |
