Thanks to the helpful information provided by Wiz and others in the Extreme Vulnerability in Apple Quicktime thread, I have uninstalled Quicktime and downloaded and installed QuickTime Alternative. Now today I wanted to check out the links to music in the Susan Alcorn thread in Steel Players, and got a message saying an additional plugin was needed to play them: Apple Quicktime! What gives? Am I doing something wrong, or is QuickTime Alternative an incomplete alternative? |

Brint;
I checked out the page you referred to and found that it also called for me to download the Quicktime plug-in. I read the souce code and found that the problem was caused because the author of that website used the proprietary Bgsound tag, for a .mp3 file, which is only recognized by Internet Explorer browsers, and is played by the default system media player (Windows Media Player). With that in mind I set out to find a solution that would allow the QuickTime alternative player to play embedded .mp3 files, instead of Firefox searching for a missing plug-in.
First of all, I needed to discover what went wrong to cause Firefox to ignore my alternate QT player. The culprit turned out to be an older version of the KM-Lite Codec Pack. It contained outdated codecs for QuickTime content, and an older version of Media Player Classic. The issues were caused by driver conflicts.
To proceed I switched to my Administrator account. Then I uninstalled the KM codec pack, and the QT Alternative player, rebooted, then reinstalled the QT Alternative Player, and the RealMedia Alternative Player. After that I opened Firefox and checked out the same page that wanted to download QT from Apple and this time the embedded Bgsound played in the web page, using the QT Alternative player. Mp3 files in Windows folders still play in Windows Media Player, as they are supposed to, and I can now play Real Media files and PlayLists.
I logged out of the Admin account and back to my Power User account, and all is well there, as well.
I hope this helps. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
