The ProII and ProII Custom are pretty much the same, with the one big exception... the ProII's had brass barrels behind the string pullers and fixed ends on the pull rods, and the Customs had nylon tuners on the end of the pull rods - down by the changer - and the rods were fixed at the string pullers.
Also, somewhere along the line SB went from a single raise/single lower changer to a double raise/single lower changer... and possibly with some other models along the way.
The SuperPro undercarriage was a different style... the string pullers were of a different design, but they also had nylon tuners at the changer, and the rods attached to the pullers with wire clips. It's also my understanding that only the SP style used pot metal.
There's a few more differences, regarding the changer as well. Maybe Ricky Davis will chime in. |

If the undercarrage has hex cross shafts then it is pot metal. If the changer fingers have a slot for the ball end of the string then they are pot metal. I recently saw a photo of a Pro II that had the round cross shafts and two hole pullers but had pot metal changer fingers. I didn't know any were built like that. _________________ Clyde Lane |

The Pro II is the same, roundfront and all, as a Professional, (which is the same body style of the old crossovers, less the cast frame) EXCEPT with the Pro II they quit the rack system and went with brass barrels behind two hole pullers. The Pro II still had the hex head end tuners. Those two models, the Proffessional and the Pro II, are closer related, than the Pro II and the Pro II Custom in many ways. The Pro II Custom came out with a square front and earlyon had the same undercarrage as the Pro II, but soon the pot metal / super pro parts started to show up, along with nylon tuners. The early Roundfronts were the real tone monsters according to many, but many loved the tone of the Customs, too. All these guitars overlapped the production of the next line in some way or another, as Shobud was constantly changing.
One thing about it, though, they ALL will upgrade with modern parts and make phenominal guitars--vintage guitars with modern up-graded undercarrages. |

That's what I'm doing to my '73 Pro-II right now. I am borrowing a Professional that was rebuilt in this manner (14-hole adjustments!!) and it's smooth as silk. Mine had the old allen wrench adjustments which, to put nicely, didn't like to play well with others . |

I have had a couple of Pro III pass through my shop, they had the pot metal changer, but not all pot like the Super Pro's. The problem with those changers was getting the 10th string on the C6th neck in the slot when you were putting on new strings, it could almost become a 'cussin job'. but they sure sounded sweet!!
