Got to go along with Roger. There are some turkeys in there but how can they include Doggie In The Window. An all time classic with beautiful lyrics and chord structure.

It's the same with all those "Best of..." and "Worst of..." lists, they are totally subjective and reflect the author's or the voter's personal likes and dislikes - just read the nasty comments about Pat Boone and you know it all.

I could make the sme sort of nasty comment about the winner in the "Best Pop Song Ever" category, it would only be my personal opinion. A little while ago we saw the "Best 100 Guitar Player" list with some names in it that made me shake my head and laugh out loud.

Funny to read those lists but don't search for any common sense behind the compilation. We are living in the days of "Bigger, Better, Wider...", so everything has to be put in those lists...

Gotta agree with Walter on this one. The author of the page has a bone to pick with pop music.

I'd love to see his list of 100 best songs.

I bet they'd suck, too.

"Ode to Billy Joe"?!? One of the worst songs? This guy is just trolling for publicity.

"Midnight at the Oaisis" has one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded on a pop song. He is an idiot.

I am fed up with these "100 Best" things. These are only meant to drum up publicity and are just about worthless in what they accomplish.

Does the badness of a song depend on how many times it is listed in the bottom 100? Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" is at number 14, and at number 17.

Also, does the artist who performed the song make it a hit or a bust? Jessica Simpson made number 46 with her version of "These Boots Were Made For Walking". However Nancy Sinatra's version doesn't make the list.

Gordon Lightfoot is at number 69? I don't care what Lightfoot song you bring up, it cannot make a "worst of" list.

We had this discussion several months ago on the Jerry Douglas board, and I'll write now what I wrote then-"Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton should be in first place, not third place-by a landslide margin!

Yummy Yummy Yummy I've Got Love In My Tummy didn't even make the list.

One of the great late night jams I've participated in was a very jazzy version of Ode to Billy Joe. That is a great song. Otherwise, I agreed with most of the other selections.

To me it's just a synopsis of how silly Pop Culture in general is.

Every one of those tunes was on the charts at one time or another, so obviously someone thought they were worthwhile. I guess they go through the predictable stages of being smash hits, falling off the charts, and eventually through the wringer of "what were we thinking?", and finally, appear on this list. If a song is crap now, it was crap when it first came out, imho.

Today people fall all over themselves to download "Sexy Back" as a ringtone... Justin Timberlake goes to sleep every night on a mattress stuffed with dumb people's money, which will salve his feelings when, I'm sure, the song will appear on some "what were we thinking" list.

Sometimes it seems that any piece of music bad enough to become a #1 hit is destined for this list after the general public is off being led off a cliff by some other marketting company.

Good music and pop culture are two mutual exclusive things, to me.

I read Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs a few years ago, just for a laugh. His list also came from reader votes, and also had "MacArthur Park" at #1.

Dave Barry made a good point in his book - to make the list, a song had to be famous enough to annoy lots of people. He said some truly bad songs didn't make it for that reason. I also think that's why good songs like "Ode to Billie Joe" and "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (and, yes, "MacArthur Park") made this list: for all of us who think they're well done, lots of folks think they're just annoying. Their loss, IMO. (Along those lines, I'm surprised "Stairway to Heaven" isn't here.)

I'm with Walter - it's fun to read the list, but taking it too seriously is a waste of energy. I even agree with some of them, but what of it?

Yeah, it's really a list of "irritating but very popular" songs. There are lots of worthless B sides out there that are much worse, or just not very interesting. Though I'm OK with "Achy Breaky" being on twice.

I really liked the song "In the Year 2525" when I was a kid. I got a kick out of seeing that one listed.

I agree with Roger Rettig. There's quite a few songs I consider
pretty good in that list. I thought "Alley Oop" would make it!
