David D., Paul and Mark all make very good points.

1. trying options besides just the pure scale elements. The major at bIII is a mainstay of rock and funk RnB music.
Another optin is the classic blues V9 bV9 V9 I.

2. Knowledge gives you more power and options AND communications.
Paul would still be a great player with lesser theory, but he is the master he is BECAUSE of his applied theory.

3. It is faster plain and simple.
