Here's a tune that's I've had on a huge random playlist for years - never realized how much pedal steel there was on it until it popped up today. Hardly a big hit, but cool tune - kind of dark alternative:

Chuck Prophet - "Baby Pin A Rose On Me"

It's from his 2004 album "The Age Of Miracles"

studio version: https://youtu.be/p_YgDy15jFA

Live version, with more steel, but not as smoothly played:

AllMusic credits Max Butler for the steel on the studio version. I think that's him also on the live version.

Enjoy!
Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

Does anyone know who the steeler was on Jack Scott’s two sided hit early 60’s Burning Bridges/O Little One? Both favorites of mine.

Toots and the Maytalls

Post by Gus York »

Just thought I'd chip in ! Played a session with Toots and the Maytalls back in 70's I think in UK, this went either to No 1 or very high in the charts. Reggae PSG very early ! Always remember the guitarist with the band saying - Hey take it easy man, I gotta play that on stage ?? No they never took me on the whole tour ! Steel playing was close to naff but its what the producer wanted, so I did me bit and disappeared into the night and Toots had a No 1 hit - Hey ho thats jazz !

An actual hit!

Jennifer Warrens "Right Time of the Night" (link fixed--here's a live version with even more steel than the radio hit recording)

George:

I don't think the steeler has ever been identified.

Could possibly be the guy in the pic below, who I can't identify. Pic is from Detroit in 1956; Burning Bridges was done in NYC in late 1959, so probably not the same guy.

Paul Franklin worked with Jack in Paul's earliest days, but I don't know of any recordings of the two.

Jack died last December if you haven't heard. Age 83 I believe.

Can we include non-pedal steel? If so, Sheryl Crow had a huge hit with "All I Wanna Do"
